Please help me understand this RESMED data

Hey Slinky - Interested you said on another thread that the REMstar with a-flex was 5 mavhines in one - care to elaborate? What does it do that the S8II doesn't do?

Parroting someone else more familiar w/the A-Flex auto, BigK. And not familiar w/any changes w/the S8 II from the S8 but first comes to mind is can the S8 II provide EPR in auto mode? The A-Flex auto can provide expiration relief in auto mode whilst the S8 can't, it can also provide some inhalation pressure relief on the transition from finishing exhalation to starting inhalation making for a smoother transition from one pressure to another. There was just a post explaining the "5 machines in one" concept w/in the last 2-3 days here in cpaptallk.

The S8 II models do not have any changes in EPR availability from the S8 models, so.... no, it doesn't.

I'll occasionally have a coughing fit, and after a particularly hard one the machine will shut down for about a half-minute. One time it happened as I was getting ready to lie down - I had already started the machine. When it happened, I saw the LCD and all the lights go off for a few seconds as the blower shut down. The LCD then went through its normal power-on sequence (i.e. the line of arrows marching across the bottom). Once it completed its bootup the blower came back on and it picked up where it left off. I'm assuming the microprocessor running the thing has a watchdog timer (a common safety technique - the software needs to periodically reset a timer, if the timer expires a hardware reset is initiated).

My Elite has a serial 200603xxxxx and firmware SX3960202. My Vantage is serial 200708xxxxx and firmware SX3960202. Very interesting - the firmware number is the same between units - certainly makes one wonder about the rumor that the Elite can be put into APAP mode! Has anyone ever taken these apart to see how similar the physical hardware is? (My suspicion: same logic board, same power supply [modulo the pre- and post-recall versions] and a different blower. The Vantage certainly seems to respond much more quickly to my breathing than the Elite).

One other experiment I just did with both machines ... if I turn it on and start it blowing then disconnect and reconnect the power both units spool up again within a second or so of when power is reapplied. When I crash my Elite, it goes through the whole welcome-screen sequence before it starts the airflow again. I believe this makes sense; after a watchdog reset you can't trust your memory contents and so have to reinitialize. If your power supply gives you a millisecond or two of holdup you can save off data that is needed to restart quickly. I'm just supposing - I've never worked in the medical equipment field; I may be drawing unwarranted parallels to avionics.

An S8 Elite can be firmware upgraded (for $$$) to a S8 Vantage, so the hardware is the same.

Re significant coughing..... its possible the back pressure nearly stalls the blower (or at least increases the energy conumption substantially as the blower tries to compensate) . Back pressure high enough to do that is probably regarded as an "undefined" condition, which may be why the firmware decides a reboot of the system is advisable to see if defined conditions can be restablished.

A question re the Resmed 8

What happens if I press the "delete data" button?
Can I delete just recent data, or does it delete everything?

I am asking because when I check headgear fixes the leak rate can record very high, and I don't want it added to that night's score.

It deletes all the data.

Don't be so paranoid about one nights score - look at the trends and discount any biases in the data anyway.

I'm not paranoid, I am looking for accurate short- term feedback on the changes I'm making to my headgear.

Seems like that won't happen till I get the software and card reader.

Mine is an S8 Spirit, made in Mar 2007, and the software ID is also SX3960202.

Okay, so I played around w/my S8 Elite last night. I pressed the Start button and held it for 3-4 seconds instead of pressing and releasing it to start the Elite.

Pressing and holding for 3-4 seconds the Mask Fit appears in the LED screen. I then played around w/my mask, pulling it a bit away from my face, etc. and watched the fit change from Excellent to V Poor, adjusted it some more and watched the fit change to V Good. So I played w/the mask some more and eventually managed to get all of the Mask Fit readings and back to Excellent. No need to press the Start button again. Eventually, maybe after 5 minutes? the pressure reduces to my set 8 cms and the LED screen returns to its usual CPAP 8 cms message.

The pressure is stronger than my 8 cms during the Mask Fit. It seems to me that I remember reading that the pressure utilized for Mask Fit was 10 cms but I haven't gone back and read the manual to be sure. I'm not sure at the moment where I tucked the manual for safe keeping. There are times that "safe keeping" takes on a meaning of "safe from only me". I didn't put it back in the carrying case the last time I checked out something in the manual. And I don't remember if it was the Users manual or the Clinician's manual.

Ooops. Come to think of it, I might have read that in the S8 Vantage's Clinician's manual since I never got the S8 Elite's Clinician's manual w/my Elite. Altho, of course, I did get a printed out "copy" of the Elite's Clinician's manual from a friendly source. THAT is in a notebook. I'll have to go look to see which manual that information is in. Meanwhile, try that w/your Elite, Vantage, AutoScore, Spirit or S8 II.

In mask fit mode Slinky, it uses the pressure from the night before so it will be higher than your base APAP value. For CPAP mode I would have assumed it used your set pressure.

Thank you, BigK. Someone did mail me a scanned copy of the Elite Clinician's Manual. I just haven't looked yet to see where I put my Manuals and that copy for "safe keeping". I used to keep them in my carrying case but when I dug them out to looking something up I didn't put them back. They are here somewhere all together. I really do appreciate that offer tho!!!

Maybe the S8 IIs don't "do" the Mask Fit any more. Did you try pressing and holding the Start/Stop button for several seconds instead of just pressing and releasing it?

Try pressing and holding it and see if the Mask Fit comes up. Do it when you have your mask on and then wiggle your mask around to get a good leak or pull it away from your face. And, yup, it does do the Mask Fit check at 10 cms. I just went in and played w/it again before I responded to your latest post.

Someone w/an Elite or Vantage try it and see what you get. The only reason I can think of that it "might" not do so is if maybe SmartData isn't turned on in the Clincian's Menu maybe?

I think the smart data being turned on only affects what is displayed - not what is stored.

The S8II does the mask fit - I've just never used it. Never had any issue with leaks etc.

Yeah, I just didn't make it clear. You press and hold the Start button down UNTIL the xPAP starts running, not just press and hold for 3-4 seconds.

Did you mean a copy of the S8 IIs Clinician's Manual??? Yes, curiosity killed the cat. I "would" like to see a copy of it, if you don't mind. You are in Oz, right? Postage wouldn't be cheap. I'd be glad to reimburse you. Or did you mean you could e-mail it?
