How Do I stop Mouth Leaks (and drooling)?

Post by KingdomeMariner » Fri Dec 14, 2007 7:48 pm

I have gone from swift II to comfort gel and now I am on the F& P 407.....I have found them increasingly comfortable, but i still have a big problem.....my leak rate is still high, and I dont feel rested. The culprate seems to be my mouth is open. How Do I know? Drool, it hasn't stopped, telling me im still wide open enough to let air leak out.

I tried a resperonics chin strap, which holds my chin up and mouth closed, but i can still part my lips a bit. I still drool with this setup, and need help. Should i swtch masks? If I go to a full face mask wont I fill it up with drool? Any other ideas on how I can stop the mouth leak?

just a helpful hint...go to your drugstore and buy some nexcare 2" papertape. purse your lips shut, use some chapstick and tape your mouth shut. I have been doing this for a year. I was having the same problems as you are. I had been using a chinstrap and it just didnt work for me. sounds a little exreme, but there are several posts here on this very topic.
good luck,
Kevin

Some folks on here have success with polydent strips to keep the mouths sealed.

KingdomeMariner, I had a similar problem with mouth leaking and I had tried several FF mask and didn't like any of them so when it came time for a new mask I tried the Liberty FF nasal pillows mask...it to allowed me to mouth leak into the mask...so by accident I came across the idea of using Saran wrap on the mouth cushion of the liberty mask to seal off my mouth and to my surprise it worked. I continued to use the mask this way for a few days then went back to using my F&P 407 nasal mask without mouth leaking. I guess what I did was to train myself to stop mouth leaking by using the modified Liberty mask, it worked for me might work for you as well. You can also use vet warp, it might stick better to the mouth cushion, as compared to Saran warp, thou I didn't have any problem with the saran warp. I now use the OptiLife nasal pillows mask without mouth leaking and get very low AHI's.
