Anybody's nostrils ever get stretched out??

Post by Country4ever » Thu Dec 13, 2007 7:00 am

Hi all,
Is that possible? .......to stretch out your nostrils (not on purpose)? I easily leak around my swift nasal pillow prongs. I've been using the Medium ones, but yesterday played around with the large ones. I have a pretty small nose/nostrils. The large ones would fill up the nostrils completely, and even be sort of tight. I thought I'd try them, but will I end up with stretched-out nostrils?? I have enough less-than-perfect features.........I really don't want to add to the list!

I can only use the big ones. May be my nostrils are already big but I dont notice much difference after 3 years. I guess it depends on how hard you stretch them.

Pillows and nose size

Post by kteague » Thu Dec 13, 2007 9:39 am

Hi. I use nasal pillows also, and have needed the large in 3 different masks, although I have narrow slotted openings. In the beginning I had my Swift strapped real tight trying to avoid leaks, and it gave my nose that Miss Piggy look while wearing the mask, and also caused broken veins beside my nose. Then with the Breeze I started out with the small and without knowing any better wore it a long time with the whole first ridge of the pillows up inside my nose. When I read someone's post about the pillows should have just the tip inside and the rest sitting against the nose, I went to a larger size and finally saw a correct fit. If a mask fits properly, it shouldn't have to be so tight your nose is scrunched up. Wish I'd have know that before I suffered for those first few months and acquired veins that can be removed only by laser.

Ummmmm.... It's not that your nostrils get stretched out. It's that there are no muscles there, and an already flexible tissue gets more flexible.

Contemplate the tampon aisle for a moment... Remember the days when you used "slenders"? I'll bet you don't anymore. It's not that it's suddenly BIGGER, it just isn't as small as it used to be.

I doubt you'll notice a change in the mirror. I know I haven't.

And... FWIW, I find that pillow & prong masks really do require a much larger pillow or prong than you expect. It's very odd when you first use them, and you're certain you're a small, but in a few weeks, you're leaking like a sieve. Once you get used to it, you discover you need a larger size.

BTW, I've met more men on this forum using smaller prongs than the women I've met on this forum. I'm beginning to suspect that men are more "hard nosed" than women.

Cheers,
Babs

YES MISS PIGGY all the way, and what gets me is they stay that way I used to have a very narrow nose and now since using the swift 11, i'm ruined for life! I find myself squeezing my nose togother through the day, especially when I glance in a mirror, restedgal's picture says it all

LOL Babs!

I've been thinking about it, and I'm wondering if Mediums are just to small for me. I have a whole stockpile of new ones (mediums). Bummer. I have that 1 large one from the original pack, so I'm going to try it tonight. Wouldn't that be funny if after all this time with those danged leaks, I just needed bigger nasal prongs?! I just assumed I was too small for the big ones, since my nose is small. I'll give it a try. That might be all I need and I can return all this other stuff......the chicken wire, the bailing twine, staple gun, the vise, air compressor, etc.
