sinus problems

Post by guest » Wed Apr 27, 2005 10:16 am

Has anyone had any sinus problems with start up. My first night at home on cpap and the next morning have itchy nose and watery eyes like the worlds worst hayfever. I am allergic to nothing. How long will it last?

I am at pressure 16 on a Resmed w/C-flex and using nasal pillows.

Don't get me started on the itchy nose. I sneezed forever until I learned to turn up the humidifier (I have Remstar Plus with HH). Also using a nasal spray at night (Nasocourt) and I got a saline nose spray to keep the inside of the nose moister during the day. It helps to cut down on the itchy. Your eyes are watering from you nose being soo itchy. Give it some time is what I hear. but I feel for you now. When your nose gets used to the pressure it will hopefully ebb. Do you ramp the pressure when you first go to sleep. Sometimes that helps me.

I can truly empathize and sympathize with you & your symptoms from starting CPAP tx. The first week my nose dripped like a faucet (just clear water)any time I tilted my head down. This was really troublesome and very embarrassing to say the least especially since I've never had any sinus type conditions before. Apparently my upper respiratory membranes did not like all the forced air throughout the night and it took a couple or three weeks for all the symptoms to lessen and almost subside. Even now I tend to have the problem some days but thankfully to a much lesser degree than in the beginning. Hang in there as your body adapts to a new sleeping environment and I feel you will see improvement in your symptoms.
Wishing you success & restful sleep!

My day after the first time I used a trial machine was hell. I sneezed and could hardly breathe. It was 2 days before I could try again, ending with similar results (despite all the nasicort and saline I could pump up my nose.

It turns out the whole thing was taken care of when I purchased my nice new machine with heated humidifier. My sleep doctor said that only 10% of everyone they see has this need. So, their loaner machines to not have HH.

So after reading this board for a week, and going on faith my Dr new a little about this, I took the leap. The HH did the trick and I no longer am congested. In fact I think my sinuses are clearer than pre-APAP now.

As for the watery eyes, I had that problem too. It turns out mask leaks can blow on your eyes in the night. If this happens extensively your eye will water constantly the next day. Speaking from experience on this one too... confirmed with my doc also.

Sore nose? If you are using nasal pillows you may have sore nose due to friction....my resp therapist just suggested slathering a very small dab of K-Y jelly at the bottom of the nostrils....eases the friction, helps with the dryness, and helps a little bit with the seal issue. Keep on tryin'!
