Man have you priced a conventional mattress, boxspring and frame lately? I did a couple a years ago and it was nearly $3000 for a quality Sealy.
You can get the 5000 series SC with pillowtop, dual-chamber, wireless remote, foundation w/legs for $1979.00 directly from Select Comfort.
I wouldn't get carried away spending extra for a fancy pillow top when you probably would only put a $60 mattress pad over it anyway (if you want it to last). You can buy a cheaper conventional mattress & box spring for much less money, but in about 10 years you will be buying another one. One thing about that airbag inside is it doesn't sag over time and it doesn't allow dust mites to enter it. Dust mites can still enter the covering or bedding just as they can on the Tempurpedic. Those air chambers are not vinyl like you would find at Wal-Mart in a Coleman air mattress either, they are made of heavy rubber-like canvas. They are pretty well protected inside so they can last a long time. The surrounding bedding materials and zipper are of good quality comparable to what you find on the top of the line mattress. And that is what you get when you go with the cheaper models, a cheaper cover.
To me spending 2 grand for a good mattress is cheap when you consider how much time you will spend in it. A 36" LCD TV will cost you that much.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

If you can afford it, I recommend the adjustable sleep number bed. It costs $3099.00 (list) but is well worth it when you consider that you spend at least a third of your life in bed.
Dan,
This one tops the prices I listed.....
Where does one usually purchase one of these? Are there local dealers that carry the Sleep Number beds?

There are local dealers, but not all stock the beds as there are so many variations.

I just made a call to the (only) local furniture store (chain...which has stores in all the local towns around here) and they don't carry the Sleep Number beds. We did buy a Tempurpedic from them a few years back and the mattress and box springs didn't come to half of what the lowest prices mentioned here were.
(It does sleep very nice)
You guys are outta my "toys" league......a 36" LCD TV? I can't find anything worth watching on my "several hundred channel" DirecTV dish.....coming out a 20-some inch flat-screen Philips TV (less then $150).

Another way to do it is to buy your own mattress topper. I sleep on a futon because I like the firmness, but have one of those matress toppers that look like the old fashioned featherbeds because my bones need some cushioning or I wake up sore.
You could get the model without the pillowtop and get your own, then you could wash it or get a new one if it got dusty, moldy, or worn. I'm just hoping the humidifier doesn't cause moisture/mold problems in my futon.
The thing I'd really love, but can't afford is a thick organic wool matress topper. Dust mites don't live in wool. I did get some wool pillows and this helped my allergy problems a lot.
Sorry to hear about your back.

don't you guys have electricity out there yet? I thought you had at least a moose-fired antler burning generator plant or something
I never miss Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel, if it is even plausable you have to try blowing it up. I still have a couple of those antique 19" Sony TV's, but they have been getting blurry lately. I know its not my eyes because things look just fine 12" away from that 36" TV.
Yeah Direct-TV has a lot of wasted channels but they are still better and cheaper than cable, in my area a lot more reliable than Comcast. You can make a change on the web, before you can close the browser it is changed on your box.

We ran out of "fuel" for the "moose-fired antler burning generator plant". The wolves ate too many of them.....and the forests have been burning up, too.
By the way, I like "Mythbusters", too.
Besides, my home entertainment center won't hold anything (much) bigger than the one I've got. (the TV was new last summer)

I know this link doesn't really have anything (that I can think of) to do with beds, but since I probably corrupted this thread with the "cost" thing and then it went into "electricity and power generation"......I figgered this article kind of plays into those things......COST and POWER.
If this scenario plays out, the cost of surviving is going to get higher.

I've had a king size with pillow top for 8 or 9 years - I remember paying less than $1900. for it and have been extremely happy with it. I sleep at 65 and my wife at 45. I had a leak in one of the air mattresses at about 5 years and they sent me a new one at no charge. They also sent me a new air compressor and digital controls at one time because the old ones weren't working; I can't remember what happened, again at no charge.
I'll get another one when this one wears out, but I expect that'll be a long time into the future.

Dual Chamber sleep number beds are the pits! At least mine was. After a short time, the filmsy foam strip that supposedly keeps the two chambers from collapsing in on each other becomes less than sturdy. If you go on E pinion and look you will find numerous people who say the same thing. You wind up clinging to your side of the bed at night to keep from sliding into the valley in the middle. Maybe the single chamber beds are okay, I don't have a clue, but I threw my dual chamber bed away.

I haven't had this experience with mine at all. The center divider in my kingsize sleep #bed is as sturdy as the day we got it home and that was two years ago. Everynight it sleeps my hubby and myself and 5 chihuahua's. What I like about it is that I can adjust it for different situations. For example just under two years ago my husband had a motorcycle accident and broke his shoulder and leg on the same side. In a normal bed it would have been almost impossible to make him comfortable, but with the sleep number we were able to adjust it to help the pressure on his shoulder and we were both happy.
I also wanted to mention that I first tried the temperpedic foam mattress but for me those didn't work because the foam seems to collect heat . Heat is one thing that drives me nutty at night. Even with the cool cotton sheets I would wake up hot!
The sleep number is high $$ and it took a lot of thinking before we sprang for it but I am glad we did.

I understand the flair up thing. I have a select comfort and until I had my machine I had no problems with the bed, even though I had an old injury as well. Once I got the machine and went to bed, I slept so soundly, I didn't move ALL night and because of that, I lay in the same spot all night long. Now I bet with a regular bed, I might have done a "little more" tossing than normal. A little more tossing and turning might have kept me from being in the same position, as the same position for too long is not a good thing. That's my novice guess at least.
Only been on machine for about 3 weeks now.

I actually think that's part of the problem with the new bed. The pillowtop is so soft I don't move around much at all. And, it's too soft which has been a problem for me since the accident. I just never imagined it would flare so badly. It hasn't been this bad since I suffered through a flight to Australia 5 years ago .

Sounds too simple, but try what I did, a new position. For me it was my right hip, so no I still sleep on my right side but put my left leg over my right one, or I try sleeping on my left side as well.

Select Comfort isn't the only sleep number type bed out there. Do some research online. We have bought two of the other brands and they work perfectly and were from $600 to $1,000 less than the Select Comfort. The first one we bought 5 years ago and it has held up well. We transferred it up to vacation home and bought a new one this year for our bedroom.
The mechanics on the pumps are the same and so are most of the materials. You really do pay a premium for "Sleep Number" advertising and those mall stores of theirs. The garantees are the same, including the 30 day return policy.
The only thing I have found is to not make the bed too soft. Hitting the worng number can actually create back spasms. Like all things there seems to be a sweet spot and comfort range. Also when choosing the setting make sure your partner is in the bed too. Since you are dealing with air bladders, even with the foam wall in between their side does exert some pressure on yours. If you set it when they aren't there, you will find it firmer when they finally lay down.

I could have had a bad bed...who knows...also I only had a full size, so the area of each chamber isn't as big as a queen or king, so maybe the slope to the pit was more emphasized. I'm glad some folks are enjoying theirs...the concept is absolutely right! I bought a extra firm mattress one time and was stuck with it even thou it was too hard...that's when I bought the SC.
