Do you need to replace the box springs on your bed when you get a Sleep Number bed or just the mattress?

Thanks.

I've slept with the Select Comfort (Sleep Number) bed since 1999 and the foam divider has never been an issue. Maybe it's because our pressures are so close to equal. (we can control the pressure, but purchased the bed without number control, so don't know exactly where it is set)

On the older models, you put it on top of the bottom box spring. We bought a new king size and they recommended putting it on a pedestal without the box spring. We would never sleep on another mattress!

We've had one for about 8 years. The one we have has a pillow top. Being an older model, it doesn't have numbers, but you just play with it to see what you like. As Chris said, sometimes softer is better, sometimes harder.

So what's the price range on these mattresses? For queensize?

Thanks again.

Back Problems

Post by ABC » Tue May 01, 2007 11:08 am

I had lower back pain for many years and was not able to do anything to get rid of it.

I now sleep in a recliner and do very well. No more back pain. I get to sleep faster and the CPAP machine works well next to the chair. I was a back sleeper anyway.

The chair gives me good back support and the bed did not. I got a new bed but nothing fancy like the sleep number bed. The chair is great.

I am a Mac user, non intel, and can't use the software. I do log the daily statistics.

We have had our bed for about 6 years now, King size w/ pillow top. When we ordered it we also ordered the Select Comfort Box spring which is really a hard plastic platform put together in sections. One for both sides of the bed.

I was a little skeptical about it at first, but find the disparity between my number (55-70) and my wifes (25-35). We struggled with a standard queen for the first 8 years marriage. I found that I usually had about 12" of the mattress to sleep on as she travels during the night. Now with the new bed, I get plenty of room to sleep. The foam between the two air bladders keeps her on her side. When she wants to cuddle I tell her to inflate her side or else I would fall over the edge and wouldn't be able to get back up to my side.

I also enjoy being able to adjust the firmness. I find I like it a little softer (55) when I am sick with a bug, but normally sleep 70-75. I do some traveling for my work and find settling into a hotel bed difficult, the Goldilocks syndrome, and all that. The Select comfort is just right.

Last time I checked, they were in the $1,200/1,500 price range.

[quote="blarg"]Only problem with those is that there's a bit of a "wall" in the middle where the gap between the two air pads are. They put foam there. It's not a huge problem, and it's not uncomfortable, but if CPAP didn't cure you of liking to cuddle while you sleep then the bed probably will.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I slept on one for both my sleep studies and found them quite comfortable. I didn't even need to adjust them much. I fooled with the first one, but just left the second one.

If you can afford it, I say go for it. I'm a "leave me alone" sleeper, too, and I think the little wall would be fine. Besides, I usually bolster myself with body pillows so I have something to throw my leg over (to alleviate hip and back pain), so it wouldn't bother me in the least.

If your husband wants it soft and you want it firmer, I say go for it!

BTW, there are several hotel chains that carry them. Try spending a night at one to test drive it. I can think of a couple in Portland/Vancouver, but not Seattle. I live in Tacoma, so I don't sleep over in Seattle. Courtyard by Marriott springs to mind. Surf around, you may find something.

Cheers,
Barbara in Tacoma

Kajun, here is the website that lists the prices:

http://www.selectcomfort.com/mattress_c ... resses.cfm

Ironically, I just returned from a Select Comfort store this morning! Within the same size, the prices vary mainly on the basis of the top cushioning material and amount of it. The 9000 range is the priciest, and has the thickest cushion over the air bladders (part of which is memory foam). The 7000 and 5000 have a combination of foam cushion (not memory foam) and rayon fiber fill, and the 4000 and 3000 ranges have only rayon fiber fill.

Also, the controls vary. The wireless digital remote is a single unit, with a switch that controls either the left or the right side. The wired digital remote has separate control handsets for each side. In the 5000, 7000 and 9000 ranges, the price is the same for either kind, your choice; in the 4000 and 3000 range, only the digital wired control is available. In the 3000 range, only a simple up/down pressure button is provided, no digital readout of pressure level is available on the control.

It appears that the compressor is the same on all models, regardless of range or size.

The base is sold separately, price based on size. Same base is used with all ranges.

Mattresses shipped to California will incur a $50-150 premium assessment over and above the stated price.

Hope this helps.

Getting old doesn't make you 'forgetful'. Having too damn many things to remember makes you 'forgetful'.

If you can afford it, I recommend the adjustable sleep number bed. It costs $3099.00 (list) but is well worth it when you consider that you spend at least a third of your life in bed.

Those are some of the highest prices I have ever seen. We just bought a new 7000 California King with the wireless digital control for under 1700.00 shipped. We got it in 4 days. When you consider how long these matresses last, they are a bargain. Been sleeping on them since the early 90's. The only issue we have ever had was the pump going out on one of them. It was 13 years old and the company still gave me a new upgraded one at a discounted price.

Dan,

This one tops the prices I listed.....

Where does one usually purchase one of these? Are there local dealers that carry the Sleep Number beds?
