What? They stole the whole idea from Critical Care, where for 25 years this phenomenon (better known as AutoPEEP for the longest time) was observed in mechanically ventilated patients as being a bad thing.
That is, until they invented Inverse I:E Ratio Ventilation and said it was a good thing.
