New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
The S9 AutoSet uses the same auto adjusting algorithm.
Few minor cosmetic and feature differences but the guts work the same.
Be aware though that the S9 machine overwrites files on the SD card...some after 7 days and some after 30 days so detailed data might be written over if you don't download at least once a week so that the data gets stored in the software. Minor annoyance.
The AirSense 10 machines don't overwrite files until either the SD card is full or maybe after one year..
Humidifier is a separate unit instead of being built in.

Oh ok, I see. Thanks very much.
So the dealer who I buy my CPAP equipment from has the S9 Auto for a pretty cheap price - just $200. I'll see if he has one with low usage hours. If not then I'll probably order it from secondwindcpap.com. I'm thinking of persuading the dealer to replace my current Dreamstation with an Airsense 10 Auto and of buying an S9 as a backup

So I've noticed that most of my events occur during what seem like from the flow rate graph to be brief periods of arousals. See the attached image for example. Do such events have a negative effect on your sleep? I had some of these events today during the latter half of my sleep today and my sleep quality was not very good either

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
Any flagged event that is arousal related isn't going to really impact your body just from the flow reduction itself.
While awake our breathing varies widely all the time and you probably have more reduction than that every day.
Now the arousal itself though....it means you aren't sleeping so great and the not sleeping so great will definitely affect how you feel.
Think of those false positive arousal flagged events as more of a symptom of the crappy sleep than the cause of the crappy sleep.
So whatever caused the arousal in the first place is the bad guy here and it's not easy to figure out what the cause might have been much less fix it.

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
Got my lowest AHI today in recent weeks. I could tell by my sleep quality that the sleep was good!
The only thing is that when I wake up I still feel like I need to sleep more but I don't feel sleepy enough to sleep. I try to just lay down and close my eyes but I can't sleep any more. So that leads me to laying in bed for an hour or so until I get up and start my day. There's just a wee bit of sleepiness feeling lingering in my head. Is this the sleep debt that people talk about? I wonder if it'll improve.

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
You may be experiencing what is called "sleep inertia"...google it...lots of reading.
Just a small sampling below. I doubt it is sleep debt...sleep dept is more short term and related to when people just don't get enough hours of sleep.
Don't ask me how to fix sleep inertia...I have no idea...the best thing I have read is try to avoid waking/gettomg up during REM and instead wait until REM is done with. The usual sleep hygiene things....same bedtime and same getting up time...not so easy to do sometimes.

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
Thanks! I've read through these links and it doesn't seem like it's sleep inertia that I'm experiencing. I just have this feeling of 'incomplete sleep' when I wake up; sometimes its greater in severity and sometimes its less. I guess it could just be something to do with sleep apnea which will hopefully go away with time.

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
So today I received a used Resmed Autoset 10 that I had bought from a user here on the forum. I've never used a humidifier before, so is there anything I should keep in mind when using it? I was wondering what would happen if the water ran out at night, would the machine automatically turn off humidification? I have a Climateline tubing with it by the way.
I also received the F30i mask that I had ordered. I tried it on briefly and it seems really good. The mask fit check showed a green smiley face and I hardly had to tighten the mask. Seems very comfortable. But, I'll only know whether it suits me or not after a couple of nights' sleep.

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
The machine won't know if there is no water in the water chamber so you want to avoid that happening. When the plastic is heated and no water is in the chamber it stinks to high heaven. Been there and done that myself.
Since you have the climateline heated hose....set the climate control setting to "auto" and heated hose setting to "auto"...and see how you do with those settings. They equal a middle of the road for humidity and heated air.
If you don't like the heated air it can be set to manual and turn the temp down to room air temp.
It's very flexible.
If you don't need much added moisture you can even turn the heat off to the water chamber and leave water in it and just get what is called passover humidity. Lots of options available depending on your preferences and needs.
Heated hose MUST be plugged in though to get those options.
Explained in the manual.

Thanks very much!
Also, the heated hose felt quite heavy when I connected it to the F30i mask. It felt like it was pulling the frame. I guess I might just have to use the normal Slimline tube with it.

Like anything new… We have to get used to something new…
If most of the weight of the hose is on the pillow next to you then eventually you will get used to it…
And as you said, you can tighten up the straps a bit if the weight is pulling the mask away from you. Lots of CPAP users use a heated hose and I’m sure lots who use the same mask as you do, use one as well. Maybe someone who uses the same madk as you will chime in with their experience and heated hose use

Right, yeah that makes sense. Guess I'll have to try it out and see what works. Tightening the straps is a good suggestion. Thanks!

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
Also, is it ok to place the machine on the floor? I actually sleep on the floor on a mattress these days and have had no trouble with placing my Dreamstation on the floor. It's actually quite convenient - the hose doesn't disturb you at all. Would it be in any way dangerous to place the Resmed on the floor (I will also be using the humidifier)?

Re: New APAP user without sleep study looking for advice
Ok I did place it on the floor last night and it worked out alright. However, unfortunately my mask leaked throughout my sleep. I'll try tightening it tonight — I think the leaks are from me opening my mouth while sleeping, causing air to rush out from the bottom of the mask.
Also unfortunately, the mask isn't as comfortable as I thought it would be, especially for side sleepers. But it's something that I could get used to I reckon, as long as I can hopefully manage the leaks. Plus, the weight of the heated tube added to the discomfort and I think it would be more comfortable to use with a normal slim tube.
