simple as that.
Unless, of course, BornInChicago gets paid each time one of us calls the other number to check the story. :P

Sorry. The inner-conspiracy-theorist is just one of the voices in my head at the moment. I rarely listen to it, though.
 Maybe it is a direct line to Epstein

That is what I dialed. It switched to 1-800-353-5221 and the ads started.

I have never had anything like that happen before.

I just tried the correct number again and it worked. Weird.
You misdialed, simple as that.

There's nothing CPAP.com could do to change the number showing on your phone.
Isn't it possible that the "on hold advertising" is simple a branch number you get switched to just while on hold?

I think it is possible that USMCVet is correct on this,

If I misdialed, it would not be the first time in my life. But when I rechecked the number and dialed carefully, I still ended up with the 353 prefix and the telemarketing spam.

On the third try, I got CPAP.com as usual.
What were the ads playing? If they had nothing to do with CPAP.com then I'm sure you dialed wrong number somehow. The number on your phone shouldn't change, it would redirect you on their end but the number showing on yours should be the same. Just like if you call customer support for any business and they transfer you, the number on your phone doesn't change even though they send you to a different one on their end.

USMCVet,

One of the ad offered involved sleep. I did notice that. Others were for vacations, etc.

What you say makes sense about transferring a call and it not showing up on my phone.

I likely misdialed then, though it bothers me that I would misdial after I was actually trying to carefully dial the number the second time. Maybe my phone autocorrected or recalled the last number or something.

Anyway, I would delete this thread if I could. Others who have had a similar phone number experience at CPAP.com would have chimed in and reported it by now.

I have many numbers in my contacts list.
Often, I create the contact before calling the first time.
This prevents my tremor from making new "friends" for me.
If I am expecting a phone call, I have learned to ask for the number they will call from.
Then I create their contact, so I will know it is a "real" call.

I do that too. I have also found that my phone will suggest complete numbers that i have used previously if what i have typed so far is the same.
