CPAP.com Phone number issue
I called the CPAP.com support number (1-800-356-5221) and somehow got nothing but spam ad offers! Seemed really sleezy.
I looked at my phone and the number showing was now 1-800-353-5221.
I redialed the correct number, and the same thing happened.
I redialed again, and it went through to CPAP.com just fine.
I wonder if I mistyped once and a "soundalike spam number" came up and my phone kept going back to it.

I don't know what number you dialed, but the number listed on their web site works fine..1-800-356-5221

That is what I dialed. It switched to 1-800-353-5221 and the ads started.
I have never had anything like that happen before.
I just tried the correct number again and it worked. Weird.

I worked for a company that had advertisements when you called. It's basically hold music but instead of music it's advertising. If there is no wait time it rings and you bypass it. Probably what they are doing.BornInChicago wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 10:45 amThat is what I dialed. It switched to 1-800-353-5221 and the ads started.

Wow. If that is what they are doing it is a HUGE mistake for CPAP.com.USMCVet wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 11:30 amI worked for a company that had advertisements when you called. What a way to ruin your company image. I am new, and I was about to leave and never call them again when I heard the "telemarketing stuff".
Re: CPAP.com Phone number issue
There are various opinions on the pros and cons of listening to on-hold spam vs listening to a generic instrumental of "The Girl From Ipanema," as far as which is most irritating, but the main thing is that it be something that fills dead air and that doesn't scream "PLEASE HANG UP!!" to the average customer.
Now for some spam in the form of a link to some online printed spam about the subtleties of the appropriateness of audio-spamming over the phone most spammingly:

Being able to share vital information about your business, services, and promotions can help improve your bottom line. Not only are you easing caller irritation with music while on hold you are also selling your business. Now, this only benefits businesses that have a call flow that relates to the services they are selling. If your business call flow is based more on business to business communications (example: Roger is calling Sally to set up a meeting, or Company X is calling Company Y for payment on an invoice), marketing messages may not be effective. In this instance, on hold music only may be more suitable. -- https://cohm.com/blog/on-hold-music-vs- ... is-better/

There's nothing CPAP.com could do to change the number showing on your phone.

Unless, of course, BornInChicago gets paid each time one of us calls the other number to check the story.
Sorry. The inner-conspiracy-theorist is just one of the voices in my head at the moment. I rarely listen to it, though.

Re: CPAP.com Phone number issue
Personally, I think we should all intro-spam our personal phone lines in our voicemail messages just to give the telemarketers something interesting to listen to:
"Are you a telemarketer? Congratulations! Today is your day! You've won a free vacation for you and your family to Telemarketers' World in Orlando, Florida. At the tone, leave a message with your full name, home phone, wireless, Social Security, credit card, and bank account numbers. I'll have someone get right back to you during dinner. Thank you for calling."
Then again, maybe part of my brain melted during my DFW trip.

When one call and asks to speak to Mr. jimbud I tell them I will get him, yell my name loudly, say someone wants to talk to me on the phone, turn up the TV and wait for them to realize no one is going to answer. Eventually they go away.
Try to waste my time, I will waste yours.

Isn't it possible that the "on hold advertising" is simple a branch number you get switched to just while on hold?palerider wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 1:47 pmYou misdialed, simple as that.BornInChicago wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 10:45 amThat is what I dialed. I think it is possible that USMCVet is correct on this,
If I misdialed, it would not be the first time in my life. But when I rechecked the number and dialed carefully, I still ended up with the 353 prefix and the telemarketing spam.
On the third try, I got CPAP.com as usual.

Re: CPAP.com Phone number issue
Long ago, I answered the phone--it was a telemarketer--.
I immediately SCREAMED, "OMYGOD!---THE BABY!"
and dropped the handpiece on the hardwood floor.
I then slipped quietly out of the house, leaving the phone off the hook for at least an hour.
I miss the good old days . . .

No. because that *would not change the number shown on your phone.*BornInChicago wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 8:22 pmIsn't it possible that the "on hold advertising" is simple a branch number you get switched to just while on hold?palerider wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 1:47 pmYou misdialed, simple as that.BornInChicago wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2019 10:45 amThat is what I dialed.
