Don’t blow-dry your hose!

Post by JJR » Sun May 12, 2019 5:55 pm

I got around to cleaning the water reservoir which was apparently hosting microbes judging by the smell. I sniffed the machine-end of the hose and shuddered. Some dish soap and lots of water later, it needed to dry.

It wouldn’t dry before bedtime, so I had the brilliant idea of aiming a hair dryer into a funnel with the small end in the hose.

Don’t!!!

The hose seems to be made of a plastic barely thicker than Saran Wrap, and didn’t hold up to hairdryer heat.

I made a temporary repair with, you guessed it, Saran Wrap, so I hope it makes it through tonight so I can get a replacement tomorrow.

Why did it need to dry? Just use it. The flow from your machine will gradually dry it.

The only time you would have a problem would be if you were using a hose hanger to suspend the wet hose higher than your mask. A bit of water could drip down into your mask.

You know there used to be a joke back in the sixties about an alternate use of Saran wrap.

Actual cpap dryers use a lower temperature that's nice and warm, but not hot. There is a specified temperature that you're not supposed to exceed when drying, so it's good to pay attention to that. The cpap dryer that I have says that it keeps the air temperature below 121 degrees F, which is most likely less than a hair dryer would put out on any setting...unless it had an "unheated", blowing only setting *smile*.

In retrospect the airflow probably would dry it.

The old Saran Wrap thing, yes I remember.

Why bother washing your hose, if you're just going to blow nasty, unfiltered, dusty air from your hair dryer right back into the hose?

Did you know that when you turn off your CPAP it continues to run for 20-30 minutes at a low speed to dry the hose? (ResMeds)

   Good idea re the Saran Wrap. Made my day! My hose dryer is my original data-less CPAP, 20 mins at pressure 20 yields a perfectly dry hose.

I picked up my new hose, and other life-limited components, today. The vendor suggested just running water through the hose and hanging it to dry, no special methods. A vinegar solution to clean the humidifier tank, easy stuff.

I use the Mask Fit setting with no mask attached and put the hose downhill from the machine. It blows the water out in no time.

yes my old hose was one piece with the attachment at both ends...
new hose has a maybe 18 inch softer bend hose that attaches to the heated hose.
make sense? LOL

If you have rainout you are already running water through the hose :D

Seriously, what is there to clean when only filtered air has been running through it? If you use distilled water, there is less cleaning needed for the humidifier tank too.

Overcleaning shortens the life of the components, meaning you need to buy them more often. Guess who profits from that?

That's part of the mask.
