"New" apap might be used...keep it?

Post by JohnTor » Thu Dec 20, 2018 5:59 pm

Hi,

I got my new resmed airsense 10 today and am keen to try it. I purchased it from an online vendor with a good reputation on this board who claims their machines are brand new, unopened and sealed by the manufacturer. However the unit wasn't in a sealed box. It looks unused but when I examine the SD card, it looks like it might have been used in September based on the file timestamps. Or is this what a new sdcard looks like? I'm inclined to use it anyway because I really want to get started. Is it OK to use or should I return it?

The number of run hours on the machine may determine whether to keep or return......To check “run hours”….With the machine plugged in and OPTIONS showing on the screen, press the dial button. Then press and hold the dial button and the home button together for 5 seconds. When you see SETTINGS on the screen, press the dial button. Then turn the dial as far as you can until you see ABOUT. Press the dial button to see “run hours”.

Do you see any other dates or times besides 9/23/18 and 4:53 AM?

That looks to me like the files the machine writes on the SD card when it's first inserted (if the machine is on). If the files were larger, then I'd say, based on that, that at least the SD card had been used before.

Check the run hours on the machine.

I checked run hours. It says 0 (zero). Every file and every directory on the SD card has the same time stamp.

I'm quite relieved that the run hours is zero. It really sounds like I can get started tonight.

So, for my first night with the P10.....

I was thinking minimum 6, maximum 15. I've read the 4/20 default is hard for newbies. Ramp auto. EPR, level 3.

I keep my bedroom cool at night, but want lots of humidity, so I was thinking manual with a high setting, but use heated tube and keep machine below mattress level to capture condensation if any.

I'll make sure the P10 pillows are not too tight. I don't have lanolin, but maybe a dab of aquafor on my nostrils? I tape my mouth.

I'll have my oximeter hooked up and will set essentials plus to get maximum info on sd card for sleepyhead.

Is this a reasonable plan for my first night?

Thanks!

John

SD card might have been in another machine.
If only the one set of files for the one date and time. Might have been just a quick diagnostic check with that machine.
Brief turn on at the factory to make sure everything works like it should.

Check the run hours as previously advised to see just how much use (if any) the machine has logged. Run hours can't be reset except at the factory level.

As for it being used...even briefly...I have bought over a dozen machines over the years...all but 2 were used either a little or a lot and a couple more than what was represented. I used them anyway.

It looks like I did get a brand new machine given that run hours are zero. And it's reassuring to hear that a bit of use is not a problem (although in my case, it looks like no usage at all).

The online ordering went really well. I ordered on Tuesday. They said they would ship on Wednesday and recommended a change in shipping company to ensure a Thursday delivery. It arrived at noon on Thursday. Now I'll have it for the weekend.

In Ontario, ordering online means cheaper prices, but you can't get the government rebate (which I am OK with). I didn't have to provide a prescription. They said a prescription is only required if they were to change the settings for me.

Actually, I thought some machines came with even a couple of hundred hrs used and was told they were from testing, not 'patient' usage... could that be what you might have had (tho' you're machine said zero run hrs)?

I like your enthusiasm! This will serve you well going forward.

FYI - Essentials Plus has nothing to do with what ends up in SH. It adds some stuff to normal patient menu, and gives a more detailed sleep report on the machine display.

Best of luck to you on your first night!

Oh yea. I've been looking forward to this. I'm all geared up. I've got the apap by my bed, the oximeter on my wrist, snorelab on my phone, sleepyhead on my computer. I've taken 5 mg of melatonin to make sure I'm sleepy and I'm watching TV while wearing my yellow blue-light blocking glasses. My teenage daughters get a great kick out of this. As a show of support, they are taping their mouths shut at bedtime. Except when they laugh, the tape falls off!

Correct, the 'essentials' and stuff setting just affects what *displays* on the machine, not what data is recorded.

My kids really like taping their mouths (me to, of course). But if they put lip balm on, the tape doesn't stick properly. Should we switch to wider tape. Currently use 1"'.

Don't put any lip balm or lotion on your lips or face before applying the tape. I would not switch to a wider tape because it may really start to irritate your skin.

May your night be filled with good nasal breathing!
