EPR wreck sleep?

Post by Sissy63 » Fri Oct 05, 2018 11:06 am

I am trying to fine tune my therapy and still not all the way there. My sleep NP suggested I try using the EPR feature. It seems like I get even worse sleep when I use it. My AHI stays very low and my SleepyHead pressure line is fairly flat. I am an emotional mess and it seems to coincide with using EPR.

Have others found they may not be getting the necessary sleep when using EPR? I notice I remember my dreams more when using it, which means my sleep isn't as deep, right?

Thanks!

yes, i'm one of those that is adversely effected by using EPR. i've kept at it, though, and am starting to see some progress. currently using an EPR of 1 and seem to be getting it tamed, somewhat.

from what i gather, folk like you or i are in the minority with that reaction.

Thanks Zonker! My boyfriend feels he doesn't sleep as well either. I have shut it off both machines and see if we feel better.

When my NP (who I like a great deal) suggested it, I also had a cold. It was hard to tell which was causing which.

I hate EPR, and I also have no idea why he would suggest that... Probably just randomly suggesting shit that he thinks might help.
Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"

They are good people at the clinic and are really trying to help me get the best therapy. I assume a lot of people fo well with it and thought it was worth trying.

Now the person who actually prescribed the machine and mask...that is a whole other story.

EPR
I didn't like EPR from the start. Give me one steady pressure on each breath instead of the machine cycling up and down on each breath.

heh. as you have by no doubt noticed in reading through the forum, that last sentence applies on this side of the pond as well!

There are few people on this board that are using the Air Start machine.(Shown in your profile)...It is the low end of the ResMed line. I know EPR works very well in the S9 and Airsense lines...I don't know why it wouldn't work well in you machine....do you know what EPR is supposed to do ?????

I don't deny they're good people, but if they don't use masks themselves they probably don't acutually have a great understanding of CPAP therapy. It's nothing against them... There's just only so much they can really understand without a more direct context. and I'm sure EPR does help some people... but it's not "prescribed" and doesn't actually help AHI outcomes, so you can feel free to ignore it. In fact though without EPR most people are annoyed by the counter pressure, people who stay off EPR tend to get used to breathing against the pressure. I'll even wake up once in a while and panic that I don't have my mask on, only to realize its on.

The whole point of EPR is to make breathing more comfortable, it's optional, if you don't like it, turn it off!

Oops...somehow I picked the wrong machine. I have the Airsense 10 Auto. I need to update that.

Yes, I do understand what EPR is suppose to do.

I didn't start with it and had no problems breathing against it. I am turning it back off. Thanks for your input! It is a challenge trying to figure it out.

Shutting mine off (AirSense 10 Elite) hasn't helped my poor sleep, but it has drastically cut my CA events.

I've been working my pressures up to set my minimum just below where my machine (APAP) typically wants to maintain me. I hated EPR when my pressures were lower, but once I crossed into the 13's, it became highly desirable (at least for me).

Good luck with it!

I think I am finding I am one who cannot handle much fluctuations. I need to keep my APAP range very tight. I have horrible sleep if my pressure varies a more than 2 cm. I had to set tight and my sleep NP thought I would be more comfortable with a wider range and EPR of two. I couldn't figure out why I returned to being anxious and emotional. It all started with the changes to my setting. I have returned them to where they were when I was doing much better.
