OPUS mask has arrived

I just received an email from F&P about the OPUS. Those of us in the US will have to wait. According to the email, there is no set time table as to when it will be for sale in the US due to approval (I assume from FDA). It looks like the plan is to make it available here in the states though.

Maybe we could buy one from WillSucceed!

Opus was available beginning Monday 18 Dec. '06. I paid $195.00 Canadian. I have no idea when it will be available to you folks in the US.

Yeah, it looks something like the Adams circuit but without getting a chance to look closely and compare I wouldn't be able to say how similar it is as an implementation. There are only so many variations on a theme available to deliver Positive Airway Pressure. Every nasal mask looks pretty much like each other don't they?

How do you know it's cheaply made? Have you tried it? It looks simpler, at least the headgear.

I don't think so.

It is a "pillow" interface as is the AC ... but I would not call it a "knock off" ... the head gear is way different, the exhaust system is way different, the shell is way different, and as previously stated the pillow silicone material is very different with added options for hose routing too.

It is quite similar to the Adam Circuit. I have an Adam Circuit and find it to be quite loud -I suspect it has something to do with the rather angular shape of the section that holds the nasal pillows. The Opus is significantly quieter than the Adam Circuit.

Congratulations, neverbetter, on having gotten ahold of an Opus ahead of anyone else in the US, such that you have been able to examine it and determine that it is "cheaply made." I have certainly been fooled by Fisher & Paykel... the "cheaply made" aspects of Opus slipped past my sad and tired assessment. I wish I had read your wise and thoughtful assessment before I plunked down my cash.

I'm with you - I trust what folks tell me here when I know they have had exerience with the item. The willy-nilly tossing around of unsubstantiated opinions about things related to therapy is not helpful if they are not based on real evidence and experience. I find it disappointing but neverbetter is certainly entitled to his opinion as we all are.

the infinity (well, I don't want to go there, but lets just say the headgear says it all. it's one string) does not stay in the nose and is flimsy.

It just looks to me like the Adams. Just like the Adams. It's Adams ugly sister.... :lol

Well then by your definition all pillow interfaces are ugly members of the Adam's family ...

I wonder if this could be adapted to the Breeze headgear? My only complaint with the Breeze is the exhaust. I don't like the side straps on the Opus (velcro on my cheeks?)

I've been using an Infinity for the last several nights and I would certainly agree that the single stretchy strap is a bust. There is, however, a second headgear for the Infinity that is actually quite similar to the Opus headgear. With this other headgear, I found the Infinity to stay sealed really well. What I did not like about it is that there was no way to route the hose straight up over the head -the ball joint where the hose attaches to the mask would not allow this much of an angle without putting uncomfortable torque on the nasal part of the interface.

If you like the Infinity, but not the single stretchy strap, you might talk to a supplier about the alternate headgear that is available for it.

It looks very similar to the hose I had my F&P Acclaim 2 mask. (https://www.cpap.com/viewImage.php?PNum ... m2_top.jpg) The Acclaim 2 mask had problems in the physical construction of the mask body, and I went through 2 bodies before they replaced the whole mask with an HC405, but I never had any problem with the hose!

The Acclaim 2 had the ability to route the hose up over the top of your head, which one of the reasons why I really liked it!

Will, did you ever try the Aura and if so, why didn't you like it? If you did try it, how would you compare the Opus to the Aura?

The Opus looks and sounds great. I like the fact that the headgear looks simple and easy to adjust - especially for people with small heads. Which is a big drawback for the Aura for many people.

My last question is this: Does the end of the hose, where it connects at the top of the headgear, extend quite a ways? That hose looks really long and therefore looks like it would hit against the back of the pillow as someone slept on their back. Which I do for a short period of time at night.
