OPUS mask has arrived

Post by WillSucceed » Mon Dec 18, 2006 1:09 pm

Picked up the Opus today and tried it out at a pressure of 14 in the supplier's office. It is exceptionally light and comfortable. The headgear and nasal pillows are like Swift but the part holding the pillows is like Infinity. Even at 14, it sealed well.

Tube can go over your head (attached at top of headgear with a velcro strap) or up either side (again attached with velcro strap) like Swift. It can also hang down the front if you wish.
Comes with 3 sizes of pillows (S-M-L) that pop on and off easily.
Exhaust is a group of small holes like Infinity -no jet blast like Breeze.

This thing is minimal, minimal, minimal. I'll take some photos and ask Rested Gal to kindly post them with a link.

Here are some pics of Opus -big thanks to Rested Gal for doing whatever it is she did with the pics that I sent her so that they could be linked to this forum.

I used Opus last night and really liked it. I tend to roll alot during sleep and I don't remember waking with any leaks. For a very light and small mask, Opus stayed well sealed and was comfortable. No sore nose in the morning like I get from Swift.

So here are my observations of Opus -your observations/opinions could easily be different. We all know that one user's "perfect" mask is another user's nightmare. These are just my opinion; don't bite my head off if your experience with Opus is not as good as mine.

On the plus side:
-Opus is really light, small and minimal. Would be easy to pack when travelling.
-Headgear is easily adjusted and comfortable.
-No big lump behind the wearer's head (no Breeze-like outrigger).
-Nasal pillows like Swift, but smaller. Does not tend to shift due to lateral pressure (like Swift does) when laying on one's side.
-No exhaust jet-blast like Breeze. Opus has an exhaust diffuser like Infinity.
-Opus is very quiet.
-Hose can hang down, go up either side (like Swift) or go straight up over the top of the wearer's head. Comes with velcro straps for attaching in the "up" positions.
-Comes with 3 nasal pillow sizes; I was surprised that the Small fit me best.
-Opus nasal pillows are more comfortable than Swift pillows.

On the negative side:
-If the back of the wearer's head is really flat, the back strap of Opus can ride up over the course of the night.
-Opus LOOKS fragile, don't know whether it is as sturdy as it could/should be. The hose, in particular, looks fragile.
-Nasal pillows on Opus are not as comfortable as Breeze pillows.

Overall, I think the Fisher & Paykel really got it right with Opus. I have not checked my overnight data yet, so I don't know if I had much of a leak rate or not. I do know that I feel good this morning and did not wake with a headache so I'm inclined to think that I did OK with Opus last night. I do know that I woke with no sore nose at all and that Opus was still sealed and nicely quiet when I woke up this morning. As I spend almost the whole night on one side or the other, I'm confident that Opus well-tolerates both tossing/turning and side-sleeping.

If you try Opus, I hope it works for you.
Thanks again to Rested Gal... she's da' bomb.

Will, you say the pillow sizes seem smaller than the Swift. Does this mean that if you're using a large Swift pillow, the Opus might be too small?

Goodmorning Greyhound:
I don't see in my post where I've said that the Opus pillows are smaller than Swift pillows however, I have just gone and checked and, in fact, the Opus pillows ARE slightly smaller than the Swift pillows.

Also, the Opus pillows are slightly softer/thinner/more flexible than Swift pillows.
Opus pillows (like Swift) do NOT have the bellows design of Breeze pillows. Opus pillows look very much like Swift pillows but are more comfortable, in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

How is the noise level of the OPUS? I consider the Swift to be extremely noisy.

I recently tried out the Comfortlite 2 pillow interface.

Based on the pics and your description, it seems as though the Opus pillows are very similar to the Comfortlite 2 pillows ... no bellows like Breeze ... and smaller in size and thinner/softer silicone material than Swift.

Sounds like a winner and one I hope to try out when it becomes available from cpap.com.

Thanks for the review.

Paul:

Thank you for the excellent review of the opus, and for the very good pics, they were very helpful! Also thanks to Laura for posting them! I respect YOUR opinion and reviews HIGHLY and like dreamstalker I will be getting one as soon as they are available! It seems this company has put it all together and fixed some of the problems of the other pillow type interfaces on the market.

All the best,

Steve,

It will be interesting to see how the Opus compares with the new Swift II which, according to an earlier thread, is to be released in the first quarter of 2007. Incidentally, cpap.com did not know whether they would be carrying the Swift II - very interesting comment from them.

I have a Comfort-Lite II --->Opus pillows ARE similar.

In comparison to Swift (which I also have) the Opus is not as wide. Specifically, the part of the Opus to which the nasal pillows attaches is quite small whereas in the Swift, the barrel that holds the nasal pillows is quite wide. The importance of this for side sleepers is that with the Swift, the wide barrel can get bumped by the actual pillow on which the sleeper rests his/her head and cause lateral pressure on the wearer's nose. With the relatively narrow Opus, there seemed to be no bumping of the nasal pillow against the sleeper's head pillow -->no lateral pressure on the sleeper's nose by the nasal pillows.

I really do think that Fisher & Paykel got it right with this one.

The company does not even have this interface on their website. Do you have a trial? Any idea how much it costs? I am interested but it does not look like its generally available, at least yet.
