My first night I didn't use cpap since I started

Post by NyNurse33 » Tue Sep 19, 2006 4:47 pm

I am so sick!!! I actually got sick over the weekend and still used cpap the first night, but last night, I just felt like I was suffocating. I know this is why I should have a ff mask in my possession. I am so congested, I just didn't know how I would do. And of course, even though before the cold, I wasn't feeling too much difference with cpap, I am really exhausted today. I am feeling so discouraged despite the cold, I miss the honeymoon phase I experienced the first 2-3 weeks. Its been almost 2 months now and I just don't notice a huge difference. I am still going to try and get myself an apap machine with data so I can figure out what's going on. My folllow up MD appt is next week and I going to insist she write a script and then convince my DME to work with me. Well I hope to wear the mask tonight, but I just don't know. On antibiotics (possible sinus infection), flonase, saline nasal spray, pseudophedrine. UGH!!

I can't yet say that i have had the pleasure of having a cold and using cpap.

I can however identify with your comment about missing the honeymoon as I have not yet repeated that first cpap high.

If I do miss a night because I took my mask off in my sleep I feel it the next day. I feel worse than I ever felt before cpap. So while I can't say that I feel terrific from using cpap I can say that I feel better than if I don't use it.

I guess all we can do is to keep pursuing the cpap high we once had!

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body totally worn out and screaming,WOO HOO what a ride!

I have never experienced the high that you are talking about, but I still plug away. I did get the software and was relieved to see my AHI below 5. Now I am going to work to get it much lower. Maybe then I will see a difference in how I feel. I have not been able to use my machine for the last two nights because I too have a cold. I fall asleep, but then my pressure goes up to 18 or 19 and I just can't handle it. Kudos to those who have that high of a pressure all of the time. Makes me realize how lucky I am to be on the low end. Here's to unstuffing our noses!!

Why is your pressure going up so high?

What was your pressure defined at from your sleep study?

It may just be me, but it seems that once I got reoxygenated and my body got used to xPAP, missing a night is just terrible. That's why I've got backups of everything from machines to masks to hoses.

As far as the initial sleep test "high", I had it big time. I was walking around looking at flowers and whatnot. I suspect they slipped me an hour or so of oxygen, personally.

I've been Cpaping for 1 yr and 8 months now. I noticed that after the initial high wears off, you will just feel normal for a while. I'm just now starting to get the second wind part of it. I guess it just took my body that long to repair itself to the point where I needed to be. But now I'm feeling a lot better. I have the energy that I haven't had in years. I've started going back to the gym, and i'm starting to actually feel and see the results. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't get discouraged.

LOL! cwsanfor
You remind me of myself!
Yup, my initial titration resulted in that same kinda feeling!
And, yes, I try to have a back-up everything!
Just don't want to go without, then suffer the effects of a non-cpap night !

I too experienced the "CPAP HIGH" and after that I came back down and feel "normal" - but no longer tired and sluggish anymore. It's been almost three months now since I've been on CPAP and my body is already addicted to it-which I guess is good considering my apnea is pretty severe at a pressure of 17cm. So, stick with it...while the high was nice - what's better is knowing that you are finally no longer a walking zombie....

Just a reminder (in case some of the newbies don't know): Your pressure has no bearing on the severity of your apnea. It just reflects how much pressure is needed to keep your airway open, not how many times you stop breathing.

This message brought to you by a college student who is procrastinating on her homework.

I like to say the following, as I do not usually come up with such great sound bites:

"I am experiencing a subtle but significant difference for the better in my life since using CPAP."

I believe it may take a long time for me to fully recoup my lost hours of sleep and my resulting lack of 'gumption'. See, it isn't just a lack of willpower, because if a non-apneic had tried to do what I do--well....

And College Girl, do you not believe that some of these discussions are what college is all about? Now, just keep the grades up with that philosophy!

*Sigh.* No, college seems to be about professors who play "let's see how much we can pile on the students last-minute before they have nervous breakdowns." It's their favorite game. So much for getting 8 hours tonight.

Hi Melissa! I just read about your being sick. I am also feeling the same way. I'm doing the whole antibiotic, saline rinses, pseudoephedrine thing. I have to say I tried using my FF mask while I was stuffed up. I felt like I couldn't get enough air. I went without my mask that night, and half of last night. When I lay down, I get stuffy again, so I only lasted half the night with the mask.

Please don't get discouraged. Keep on using your cpap. The honeymoon period is a bit of a tease, but you will start feeling better. I, too, wondered when I would start feeling the benefits of all of this "cpap crap" but I am slowly seeing my old self again. Maybe it's more of a gradual thing for some, and we just happen to be two of those people

Hope you're feeling well in no time!

Dawn

Can I just say? That you guys are totally awesome (and no I'm not a valleygirl) Its so nice to talk to people who understand what I'm going through. My husband, mother ,friends, they just don't get it. They just think I snore. Well 2nd night and could absolutely not do cpap last night, I think I would of died in my sleep if I forced it. LOL. I am waiting to feel better, but of course without cpap its a cycle. I hope everyone else who is currently sick, feels better soon too. Like most of you, I can feel the difference with vs without cpap, but while using it constantly, I wasn't. We'll see. Thanks again.
