Yep, congratulations are tentatively in order. (I say tentatively because we're still in the first 30 days, and something like 35% of pregancies spontaneously and naturally terminate in the first 30 days).

And for those who asked if this is my first, no. I have two children and two step children. So this will make 5.

Liam, who needs one more to have a Brady Bunch... or four more for a baseball team.

Congrats! I was thinking bout what you said, and thought that if pregnancies started the same way there would be a lot more religions...

Yeah, nobody bought it when my first wife and I conceived our first child (oops!) about two months before the wedding.

Ah well, timing is everything.

Liam, who is timing you even now.

(Yeah, I don't know what they all mean, either.)

What's the difference????

My name is Michael Lawrence King (MLK). I am a gay caucasian male. How offended would you all have been if I made the following comment?

For a while I was under the impression that he was black, so I didn't want to be associated with his name.

Shame on all of you for not seeing prejudism for exactly what it is!

Political correctness finds its way onto the forum.

Ah, I always assumed your name was Martin Luther King, and that you WERE black, and I decided not to hold it against you.

(KIDDING!)

Folks, we have to LIGHTEN UP. I understand you took her comment to be insulting, and that's your right. But I don't believe it was intended as anything but a (perhaps poorly conceived) joke. Let it go.

I'm sorry if you are offended. But at the same time, you are offended because of the prejudice which has been leveled at gay men and women traditionally and today by our society. And yet one of the things you're now trying to do is shut up someone whose opinion (maybe) disagrees with yours, exactly the kind of oppression you are complaining about.

You can say what you like, she can say what she likes, I can say what I like (heaven only knows you'd have a hard time shutting me up). But really, you seem to insist on turning a web site about Apnea into a battle ground for sexual orientation, and it just doesn't belong here.

(Arguably, turning it into a stand up comedy podium doesn't, either, but people seem to approve, or I would have stopped a long time ago).

Liam, who was believed by most of his friends to be gay all throughout college. I never bothered to correct them, but trust me, I know some of what being thought of as gay can mean, I'm not writing in the abstract here.

There is a difference between preference and prejudice. She might have been wrong in her assumption, but if she is not gay, then I could see that she might not want to be associated. If she had said, "I was under the impression that she was an alcoholic, so I didn't want to be associated with her name." That would be wrong too? People are allowed to have opinions and preferences. Because your lifestyle doesn't agree with it doesn't mean she has to change.

Prejudice - An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.
A preconceived preference or idea.
The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions. See Synonyms at predilection.
Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion.
Detriment or injury caused to a person by the preconceived, unfavorable conviction of another or others.

What she did was not prejudice, it was preference.

Not Liam, His wife

This is Janet, Liam's wife.

I generally don't spend a bunch of time reading the boards, but I've been following this thread for a bit, and I have some strong opinions on racism and on opression.

I think that MLK might be perceiving a predjudice, which may be accurate. But, it might just be that she LOVES gay people but doesn't want to be thought of as gay. I wouldn't. I have had (before marriage, of course) a certain agenda, one which would have been seriously compromised if Liam thought that I was gay. I have a great friend who LOVES when people think that she is gay (although she is as straight as a Republican who was thinking about running for President because his dad was President and he couldn't think of anything else to do with his life seeing as he pretty much crashed at his other endevors (Oops, I digress)). It served her agenda.

Or perhaps the original poster is a closet lesbian. She doesn't want people to go near thoughts of gay women, so as not to out herself.

There are many ways to take the statement, "I didn't want to be associated with her, as I thought that she was gay." Some of them not very PC, which is OK too.

But, I have a point... and lost it... hopefully I will find it again. You shamed on us for thinking something... It is so easy yet lazy to go down that path each time someone doesn't cheer the gay community, each time someone mentions the gay community. Be optimistic, assume the reasoning that offends you least, it is much easier on the soul...

Janet

What a fantastic stream. Starting with ages and ending with political correctness, with a smattering of other interesting biographical information in the middle.
For the record I am 57, have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, largely due to wife (Chris) and friend's observing my daytime sleeping habits. I was surprised when I was told I have SA as compared to Chris I "sleep" quite well, or at least I thought I did. I am awaiting my CPAP prescription, and will start using CPAP in a week. To get back to some of the themes in the stream, I thought using CPAP would cause me to have a deep and restful sleep, rather that nights of interrrupted sleep. Am I wrong? As it does rather sound as if many of you now generally have quite interrupted nights. However, when I asked my Sleep Doctor, if my daytime dozing would be cured by having more sleep, he advised the problem was not the length but the quality (Where have I heard that before?) and without more REM sleep, my condition would not change; I therefore need CPAP.

Well I still wake up once or twice, but I am getting "better" sleep.

That's so tasteless. How would you feel if I make this statement, but changed "hose" for "rag"?

Liam, who just can't let it go. He really is a moron.
