Suffering

Post by Lee Lee » Tue Aug 22, 2006 8:58 am

I've been feeling yucky and sleepy for a few days now. Maybe more. This is after 10 months of feeling great after getting on Apap therapy.
My machine is showing HI 5.1 AHI 5.7 AI 2 Pressure 11.
Is this enough to make me feel sleepy? (these numbers are higher than I normally have.)
I've seen these kind of readings for the last few weeks.
Before that, my pressure was 9 ish and there was no AI, and the HI and AHI was down around 3ish. My sleep study showed my pressure needed to be 10.
I almost fell asleep at work yesterday in the middle of a meeting!
I changed my filter, I'm not having mask leaks, I tape my mouth and keep everything squeaky clean.

You may need to increase (or even decrease) your pressure a bit.
Is your mask setting correct in the machine?
I would be very tired with those numbers.

Good points.
Is the mask setting correct? I have a Res Med Machine with an FP mask, and neither ResMed or FP can tell me which is the correct one, so I have it on the Mirage setting. (The highest, I think.)
As far as the pressure, the DME had the range set higher than it is now. I was trying to use the Swift and I couldn't tolerate it, so they changed the range.
I don't know how to change it myself.
But thanks for your answers.

Lee, your profile shows this as being the machine you have:

Resmed S8 Vantage EPR Auto

Is that correct? You have a Vantage, and it is being used as a straight cpap, blowing a single pressure...right?
ResMed S9 VPAP Auto (ASV)
Humidifier: Integrated + Climate Control hose
Mask: Aeiomed Headrest (deconstructed, with homemade straps
3M painters tape over mouth

If it were me, I'd set the autopap range for 9 - 16.

Maybe you are losing some of your cpap air via mouthleaks?
(Do you find yourself with dry mouth when you wake up?)

No mouth leaks, I'm taping my mouth shut. Which thrills my husband.

Any chance you've gained a few lbs lately? I find it can make a difference.

Yes,actually. After losing 45 pounds this past year, I've gained about 5 back, so I wonder. The only other things are that I stopping taking my HRT (hormone replacement therapy) about a few weeks ago. And I have a horrible case of reflux, but I've always had that and XPAP therapy was working just fine.
I'm trying really hard not to panic here, but I woke up feeling awful. I looked at my data and the numbers were the worst ever, Pressure 11.2, Leak 0.10, AHI 7.9, AI 0.6 and HI 7.3. This has all happened within a week!
The worst part is that I felt so good before, so I know what I'm missing.
I will try Rested Gals suggestion tonight to increase the settings.
Thanks to all for trying to help. I'm so grateful to have found this board. My Docs don't know much and the DME knows nothing.

Hi, the reflux can make a big difference (very commonly associated with OSA), and if you can get that under control overnight you'd probably feel a lot better.

HRT

Post by snoozie_suzy » Wed Aug 23, 2006 9:28 pm

All I know is 2 years ago my mom stopped taking the HRT and she had been on PremPro for 11 years and she felt like dirt for a good two months, and had developed bad insomnia during that transistion too.

You figure if the hormones help to balance out hot flashes and other symptoms, then when you take them away, the body needs to reacclimate things a bit.

Just a guess that it might have something to do with it since its around the same time you stopped/ that you started feeling this way. Do you see a OB/Gyn specialist that might deal with hormones etc. I know some docs specialize in menopause etc, and maybe their is some other estrogen creme or something to help allieviate the transisition, if indeed your yuckiness has anything to due with stopping HRT.

Good Luck.
Suzy

About that reflux - my gastroenterologist told me that sleeping on my left side is better for reflux.
