Any tips for dry mouth?
Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
I use XyliMelts by OraCoat. They are small tablets that actually adhere to your gums and melt very gradually throughout the night. It's really an amazing product, flavorless and inexpensive. My daughter is a dental hygienist and she helped me find this product.

So I have lowered the humidifier settings and also stopped using the "warmup" setting before bed. I have been clearing out my nose and using my old nasal spray to try to clear out my nose. I have noticed a significant difference with how dry my mouth is and my mouth is healing up. The thing is I really can't get my nose quite clear enough to actually breathe through my nose all night.

Got an inhaler stick/tube (Vicks or Mentholatum) handy? I used one of them frequently when I started this therapy.bri127 wrote:So I have lowered the humidifier settings and also stopped using the "warmup" setting before bed. Dry mouth is a tough one, you may want to try biotine toothpaste, to help with dry mouth, some swear by it. It's the only one I will use, but it is no miracle for me.
As for your nose condition, what about trying hypoallergenic filters, I have seen some improvement with use them, also maybe a nasal spray like flonase. Also you could try pur sleep essential oils, to put behind your machine, or some kind of essential oil that helps with breathing. I use it when I have colds, and it works wonders for me.
I wish there was a better answer for dry mouth, I have it bad, even off the cpap, many meds can cause dry mouth too, so looks into your meds.

Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
I have VERY bad dry mouth with CPAP and last night I used Orajel for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised that it actually worked to keep my mouth moist. I usually wake up with my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth and my cheeks glued to my teeth and gums. Not so last night, I woke up with a moist mouth, I could still taste the Orajel in my mouth, not a bad taste at all. So it WORKED and I'll definitely keep using it. I've tried biotene, FAIL, tablets FAIL, chin strap BIG FAIL. The other thing I use along with the Orajel is Chin Up Strips, together this combination has helped me tackle one of my biggest hurdles of using CPAP.

Where can I get hypoallergenic filters? I will look into them. I have been using a nose spray but I am going to ask my doctor for another one.SleepingBearDoNtWake wrote:Dry mouth is a tough one, you may want to try biotine toothpaste, to help with dry mouth, some swear by it. Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
Slightly off topic, but lately my boyfriend has been getting nose bleeds and I have been having blood in my nose as well. ( Not helping with the breathing ). I was looking into this problem and wondered if getting a humidifier would do any good for dry mouth and keeping your nose clear'? Would it help while wearing a cpap mask or would it not affect you since you have that on? Just a thought.
Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
yes, it would help. after all, the room humidity gets sucked in with the rest of the air and presented to your nose.bri127 wrote: I was looking into this problem and wondered if getting a humidifier would do any good for dry mouth and keeping your nose clear'? Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
I was having dry mouth. I would wake up with my mouth crazy-glued together and had to slowly peel off with water cause had little saliva do it any quicker. Turned out to be Diabetes, my glucose was 450. Now that my glucose is around 160 it doesn't happen any more. I always thought it was just the CPAP cause I have had a higher leak rate in the past year than in the previous 11 years. I should have suspected it sooner.

I get my typoallergenic filters from my DME for free, they give me 2 filters every two months but I have to call them, to get them. I would also seriously try using the pur sleep, it is much better than a vicks or a vapor rub. They sell it at cpap.com I use it when I have a cold, and I wake up, and I am not even stuffed up. It is very strong, but it works.
Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
I have dry mouth too, probably due to asthma med i'm using:tiotropium plus with other inhalers.
But i dont use high humidifier (2 only) cause if higher makes my dry mouth worst esp in malaysia hot climate.
What i do is i took a glass of water before sleep, and everytime i wake up in the middle of the night(i will drink some more water)
Somehow ,its, finally okay.
(But i do wake up during sleep often due to bad asthma control)

Re: Any tips for dry mouth?
I resolved the mouth breathing recently (see newer post on neck brace).
I wear a chin strap, but found out it is best to put it on before the mask. Pretty obvious, but I did it the other way around for ages and had problems.
You could try wearing a soft-material neck brace. It keeps the chin up, preventing mouth breathing. At least it does in my case, and it is possible you don't even need a chin strap if you try it out. (They are not as tight as you might imagine, in fact they are not supposed to be tied, only supportive, but I found in my case that it was not enough, hence the neck brace). A neck brace may sound like another nuisance. I find it warm and comfy, but it really is a matter of picking the lesser of all evils in these matters. In my case, obstructing air due to tucking in my chin too far against my chest was a massive issue (as were mouth leaks). So resolving this is worth the minor hassle. It's about finding the sweet spot where you end up having a great nights rest most nights (if only I could find a solution to colds, bar the medicines ).
Best of luck.
