You are right Granny. But, it is more difficult for those of us who move in bed a lot. Pulling on the hose, rubbing the headgear against the pillow, etc., causes problems. The perfectly adjusted/fitted mask cannot overcome all of these problems.ChicagoGranny wrote:All of them either changed sizes or learned how to adjust and use the mask properly. There is no such things. Nostrils do not build callouses, "tough" skin or muscles. Neither inside nor out.for my nostrels (sic) to toughen up
These people are learning how to wear nasal pillows.
There is nothing wrong with using lanolin. My headgear had worked a little loose early this week and my nostrils got a little red from rubbing. I tightened the headgear a bit this morning and will use lanolin the next night or two until the red is gone.palerider wrote:hence the frequent recommendation to use lanolin on the sore nostrils.

I didn't 'adjust it properly' or 'change sizes' I started with a p10, with large pillows, over a period of a couple weeks, my nose stopped hurting when I'd use it. explain that.
do you use a nasal pillow mask, or are you just guessing about your advice?

That Pad a Cheek barrel cozy I just got for my P10 is wonderful for under the nose discomfort/redness/chapping and I swear it helped keep my pillows in the right spot too. Just love it.

Sheffey, No doubt a lot of tossing and turning in bed makes the use of CPAP more difficult. How is your RLS doing this winter?Sheffey wrote:You are right Granny. I use an Innomed Hybrid which has nasal pillows. My nose has hurt at times and it was because the headgear was adjusted too tightly. Loosening it took care of the problem.palerider wrote:do you use a nasal pillow mask, or are you just guessing about your advice?
My nose has also been irritated from rubbing of the mask at times. Tightening the headgear would stop the rubbing, and eventually the irritation would go away. I do use Lansinoh brand lanolin (http://www.target.com/p/lansinoh-hpa-la ... dSlot=_1_2) anytime I get irritation.
Do I need to remind you that the OP said,
.nostrils killing me!!!
That is a very clear indication that something is wrong and needs to be changed. Telling the OP that "your nose will get used to it" and "your nose will toughen up" is just poor advice.
Re: First night with CPAP….nostrils killing me!!! :(
I had the same experience when I started using my P10s. I thought "there's no way I'll ever adjust to it." I added lanisoh and that helped a little, but still had soreness.
And then, after a few weeks, I adjusted and the stopped bothering me. My suspicion is that nostril skin toughens not dissimilar to the way we develop callouses elsewhere. It'd pick the size that fits best and stick it out a bit longer-- even wearing it during daytime when you to speed the break-in process.

It's doing quite well. 900 mg of gabapentin at bedtime does the trick for me. Thanks for asking.ChicagoGranny wrote:Sheffey, No doubt a lot of tossing and turning in bed makes the use of CPAP more difficult. How is your RLS doing this winter?

You had a new mask. The headgear will stretch over the first week or so. I've used nasal pillows for many years and can't believe that the tender skin on the nose "toughens".Sibbs wrote:And then, after a few weeks, I adjusted and the stopped bothering me. so, in other words *NO* you don't. a hybrid mask is NOT equal to a pillow mask.ChicagoGranny wrote:I use an Innomed Hybrid which has nasal pillows.palerider wrote:do you use a nasal pillow mask, or are you just guessing about your advice?

and no, you don't need to remind me about what Princessmommy (who's been silent since then) said.
*I* experienced the SAME THING when I first started using the P10. a mask which is just as tight now as it was when I started. however, the first night, it hurt my nose so badly that I had to stop using it part way through the night and switch back to my FFM. I continued to switch off between the P10 and my FFM and over a relatively short time got to where I was wearing it all night.
you're blowing off someone's problem, telling them things you have *NO* experience with... you should stop.
no matter what you think, a nasal pillow mask like Princessmommy or I have does NOT fit the same way on the nose as the hybrid does. I've used BOTH.

thank you for pointing out that the 'getting used to a p10' situation isn't "just poor advice" as some ignorant people on the forum seem to think.Sibbs wrote:I had the same experience when I started using my P10s. Re: First night with CPAP….nostrils killing me!!! :(
it doesn't stretch very much, and switching to a brand new out of the box mask with brand new headgear doesn't bother me in the least, now that (for want of a better phrase) my nose is used to the p10.Sheffey wrote:You had a new mask. and, as I pointed out, nose pain with the p10 isn't universal, as I said, my bedmate took to it like a duck to water. (took to cpap as a whole like a duck to water, for that matter. popped it on, and straight to sleep, never even a grumble.)

An active approach to issues is my preference. Sorry that you advise people to sleep and wait for things to get better.Insanity, n. - doing the same thing over and over expecting different results

Re: First night with CPAP….nostrils killing me!!! :(
cough cough, crickets, cough cough.
My nose was sore the first week after I started using the nasal pillows. On too tight, not the right size, straps needed to be adjusted, skin irritation all contributed. Play with everything. It should not "hurt" to wear it. Sit in a chair watching TV, or lay on the couch and see if you start getting pain. If you do, loosen up , reposition the straps until it feels comfortable.
I also had to get a different pillow. My pillow ground the mask into the side of my face, causing it to bend my nose.
Good luck and stay on the forum and let us know how you are doing.

We each are telling what our experiences are. I can only tell mine. With my first nasal mask my skin was very sensitive and blistered on the sides of my nose. Once I got that healed after about a week, my skin became used to it and it was no longer a problem. When I switched to the P10 there was a sore spot just inside the tip of one nostril. I tried all cushion sizes but fitting was fine. The soreness was on the side I sleep on and think there might have been a little more pressure there. After treating it for about a week, it has never bothered me since.
