First night with CPAP….nostrils killing me!!! :(

Post by Princessmommy » Wed Jan 27, 2016 1:07 pm

Last night was my first night using my Cpap machine. I'm using an Airfit P10 and my pressure is a 7. The fit is good, no leaks, etc. My nostrils hurt so much..I know it will take some time to get used to. Any advice for a newbie would be great. Does the Ayr gel work to soothe nostrils? I have the humidifier set to "auto"….so I think everything is fine…I think it's just initial discomfort since I've never worn nasal pillows before. Sigh….I know it will take a while to get used to…but I'm so tired today!

I used the Ayr gel and it helped. If the soreness is at the end of your nose or just inside the end, Lansoinoh cream found in the baby section can help. It's used for nursing mothers. It will get better.

Lansinoh. It is in the breast feeding isle of drug stores, and supermarkets. Use it sparingly, but when applied to your nose, it will heal it right up.

+1 on the lansinoh lanolin. just use a TINY amount (like the size of a bb... just enough to lightly coat)

I use the Airfit P10 also and find it to be a very comfortable mask. Be sure you're using the correct size pillows. Might be a good idea to experiment with different sizes. Too small or too large can cause irritation.

I recently starting using this mask also. I almost quit using it because I felt like my nose was going to fall off. It was so sore on the outside of each nostril. I did watch the fit guide and I realized that I was wearing it wrong. I had it pulled down in the back. One strap was low on back of head and one was higher on back of head. I think it was pulling on my nostrils too much. Now when I put it on, I only pull one strap on the back of head and leave the other one on top. I also have the nasal pillows pointed more up than horizontal. I saw that in the video. I really like the Airfit P10 nasal pillows more than the wisp nasal mask I was using before. I almost quit wearing it one night because of the discomfort. It has been a week now and everything has healed. I am glad I stuck with this mask.

Please check for lanolin alcohol allergy before trying the lansinoh - Test on the inner elbow first and check for rash or itchiness. If you put this on your nose and are allergic, can cause swelling of the nasal cavity.

Can you be more specific about what hurts?

Princessmommy wrote:I think it's just initial discomfort
No. There should be no discomfort. Something is wrong with size, fit or adjustment of your mask.

perhaps you've forgotten, or not noticed the *MANY* posts here from people that are adjusting to nasal pillow masks.

nose pain is *COMMON* when first starting out. doesn't bother everybody (my bedmate never had a problem), but does bother many (myself included), hence the frequent recommendation to use lanolin on the sore nostrils.

might be good to be more specific on WHICH lansinoh product... since there's a whole line of products, and the lanolin doesn't say 'cream' on it. but the diaper rash cream DOES (if they're still making that)

that could lead to some interesting responses.

For the first month I used vasoline on my nostrels every night. Toward the end of the month I really didn't need it any more. It just seemed to take that long for my nostrels to toughen up.

All of them either changed sizes or learned how to adjust and use the mask properly. Or continue to use a lubricant because they never quite got it right.

for my nostrels (sic) to toughen up
There is no such things. Nostrils do not build callouses, "tough" skin or muscles. Neither inside nor out.

These people are learning how to wear nasal pillows.

There is nothing wrong with using lanolin. My headgear had worked a little loose early this week and my nostrils got a little red from rubbing. I tightened the headgear a bit this morning and will use lanolin the next night or two until the red is gone.

If the nose itself actually hurts, you may have the headgear adjusted too tightly. If the nose is red, you may have rubbing caused by headgear adjusted too loosely.
