Guests allowed to post
Allowing guests to post may be a great idea, since some of our registered posters cannot log in and write a post, followed with something like, "That last post was me. I had problems getting logged on."
If the guest posting acceptance was lost, we may also lose some sage advice. Especially for aging brains, the sooner a thought is entered via a keyboard, the more likely it will actually be posted!

I am one of the newer registered posters who lost control with a "Guest" over, of all things, a "lubricant" (which shall remain nameless...lol) issue. My initial reaction was that this Forum should require ALL posters to register rather than letting anyone take "pot shots," or worse, post patently erroneous information anonymously.
Upon further reflection, however, and after apologizing for my intemperate behavior, I realized that limiting postings might prevent many "newbies" from venturing forth with their critical health care questions. To me that is the overriding issue, and the preeminent reason for this Forum's existence.
I'm more than willing to put up with the SPAM, and a few Guest idiots, to enable those who truly need our help and understanding. Absolutely no other sleep apnea Forum comes close to achieving this goal.

Another perspective from a "guest"...
Many websites and forums require registration to participate. I have registered on some, and simply never went back to others.
Why?
Username/password proliferation. By time I get through the 12 (count 'em) u/p pairs I need for my workplace plus 3 for my home systems (my normal username, root for my inside machines, and a distinct root for my firewall) I then start counting web forums, 401k/IRA accounts, shopping sites, and so on. I literally *cannot* keep track of so many codes. To make matters worse, I participate in forums and shopping sites from at least four distinct computers, so even the browser's password manager is only a partial solution.
Maybe it's just me, but it's why this post says "guest" in the corner...

Thank you for that perspective, Guest. I certainly agree with you that it can be a problem sometimes, particularly if one doesn't sign-in often enough to remember these things. It's a problem many of us have to deal with one way or another, and I've certainly had to call in a few times other places over the years to get registration/password stuff straightened out. Don't let the password thing keep you from identifying yourself though as Guest1, Guest2, or as Dr Seuss often said, Thing1, Thing2, etc., particularly if you post multiple times in a thread.Guest wrote: I literally *cannot* keep track of so many codes.
I've noticed there are a few guests here who have taken the courteous step of identifying themselves in this manner. It's a little thing but, believe it or not, it truly helps the social interactions here.

Bill

Issac is right, dllfo wrote:I have asked the "Guests" to register so we can get a feel for their knowledge base.
Put another way, there are many, many machines and masks that I know NOTHING about. If one of the regulars posts an opinion on it, I can usually know they are reliable. BUT if a guest posts....I have no idea WHICH guest it is.
We have some guests who are REALLY knowledgable and some who just make snide remarks. Some forums allow the person who starts a thread to block people who are not contributing anything positive to the thread. And I have used the block feature in that forum 3 times in a year. I wish we had it here.
I also wish guests could not post. You can call yourself superman if you want, who cares? But we can then judge the value of "Superman" inputs. Let a guest read all they want. Even let them PM people, but not post. I may be wrong Isaac, but I can't see a good reason for not registering IF you want to contribute positive comments to the forum.
I am not trying to argue with you and I hope I have not offended you, but you did ask. This is one of the best forums on the internet and I would like to see it stay that way.
In closing, I agree with NightHawkeye, the guests are normally not bashed by the regulars. Just the opposite from my observations. Can you please give a specific thread where you saw the guests being bashed by our regulars? Again, maybe I am wrong. Please show us where.....
I have asked the "Guests" to register so we can get a feel for their knowledge base.
You want the truth? You don't know the difference.
They make snide remarks because you and some other members here are always on their backs to register. Tell me, who died and made you, Goofproof and Wulfman the Gods of this board?
This is America not communist China, a person should only have to register if they WANT to not because of you clowns being on their back. Membership is not a requirement of this board nor does it give you the right to police it.
As for getting to know their knowledge base? What a joke, same excuse Wulfman uses, I think the Guests already know what your knowledge less base is.
Issac is 100% right.
Now I'll log back in so I have an excuse for spreading misinformation.

Another Guest
Guest, I agree with this statement
Guest, this statement gives registered members every reason to hate GUEST postsMembership is not a requirement of this board nor does it give you the right to police it.
Guest, I applaud your effort to defend GUEST posts and I agree that no registered members here (besides the board administrators) have the right to say who should or shouldn't be allowed to post. The problem as I see it is even though you are making a valid point, you then negate it all by being a jerk.Anonymous wrote:Tell me, who died and made you, Goofproof and Wulfman the Gods of this board?

SUPERMAN
If the number of posts/threads is any indication of success, all you have to do is look at the date stamps on the threads on the forums. As I write this, there are more than 3X the number of posts with todays date (here) as are on the next most-used site.
I'm also "Guest" posting this one, to make a point, too.
(that not all "guest" posts are nasty)
Issac,
Thank you for starting this thread. I hope you'll hang around this forum for a long time. I believe the collective knowledge/experience of this forum is its greatest asset.

But I've probably been breathing too much of the polluted ozone, too
