Data while awake

Post by curems » Wed Nov 04, 2015 9:00 pm

I've been battling with the sensation of not being able to sufficiently fill my lungs and my pulmonologist is thinking it is a combination of asthma/allergies and a neurologic difficulty regulating my breathing (I do also have benign MS). I know the cpap can't tell if you're awake or asleep, and I know that breathing patterns while awake are more erratic, but can information from the machine be useful in any way for the time you are awake?

The other night I had insomnia (unusual for me) and I kept the machine on for a couple of hours while I tried to sleep. For those 2 hours I had an AHI of 20.6 with 10 clear airway events (centrals according to DreamMapper) and 24 OAs. I'm just wondering if this information can be useful in any way as my doctor tries to work out the best course of treatment. (My pulmonologist is not my sleep doc, I have a separate sleep specialist.)

I appreciate any thoughts you may have about this.

The way your body works while awake and asleep are completely different. The data recovered wouldn't be worth much, as apples and oranges are different. Jim

Thanks Jim. I knew the first part of what you said but didn't know if the data could be useful at all in this situation. I appreciate your response.

CAs are common when you have the machine running and you are awake. It means that you stopped breathing for over 10 seconds, but there was no obstruction. You consciously stopped breathing.

I wish it was conscious! I'm having trouble consciously controlling my breathing all day!

This is a very common issue. Especially for new users.
If you're going to lay there with the machine running, you need to consciously breathe to keep it from recording "events".
I've often found that when I DO that, I end up falling back to sleep.......sometimes fairly easily.

Thanks Den. Fortunately that's not an issue for me as a rule with the machine, I just need to work on consciously breathing while awake!
