Emigration
Hello Thank you for very usefull information about cpap machine.
May I impose question. It is not associated to sleepp disorder. You have been very kind to me . I greatly respect your thoughts.
I have opportunity to emigrate to Canada or United Kingdom. I have relative there . This will allow my relocation. I must decide Canada or United Kingdom .
My brother in law isengineer in Manchhester England. UK. He live there 2 years.
I may also emigrate to Canada . I have brother near Toronto. He is engineer for aircraft engine manufacturer.
I have degree in library sciences. I am employed at the repository national library India. My family is myself, spouse, 4 small children. I am 36 years of age. My spouse may work in software industry.
May I impose question. Of which country would I receive most thorough benefit to health and education for my family.
It is very desireable to own shop to sell rare and classical books. Where is there a need for such books.
Thank you for very kind assistance .
Many blessing

emigration????
i know everyone will say i', biased, yes i am. i love the uk, it offers every oppertunity to a young family. firstly there is the brilliant countryside, our very history stands in every town or city center, in the form of great archetecture, shops, churches & pubs, as well as many other buildings dating back to the 1100s & behond in many cases, such as anchant monuments, stone henge & the likes, wonderfull. schools, there are many brilliant schools, & some not so brilliant, but do your homework on that one. the church schools are generaly very good, but if you dont like what you see you can always go private, allthough i dont think you'll have any need to go down that route. health, we now have a brilliant health service, waiting times are down, i have wittnessed that personally. it used to be an 18 month wait for an mri scan, now its 4 weeks, non urgent, if your urgent, its days, or immediatly. you cant beat that. ive just had cpap refural, 3 months from start to finish, some on this site have said they've had that long & longer through insurance. also if you cant afford insurance, you either go without or pay out, but if you cant afford insurance, i dont think youll be able to pay out do you. theres none of that here, we pay our national insurance contributions, it goes into the kitty and is there as, treatment for everyone who ever, whatever their status, no one is ever turned away + you can be assured, your getting the right treatment for you, not the product that best lines the doctors pocket. houseing must surely be another consern, generaly , the further south you live, the higher prices are the propertys. book shops. im sure the type of book your wanting to sell will be very popular, either in the rural areas, like the cotswolds, hay-on-wye, worstershire, anywhere like that, or city centers, anywhere realy, although you may do better in the more affluant areas,as i've sugested. have you thought about edinbough? a lovely city, not to large & relatavly quiet compaired to some areas, but i would think ideal for what your thinking about doing and a brilliant place to bring up a young family.. anyway best of luck in your new venture. i truely wish you well & your children, jean
Beautiful Countryside
I worked on assignment in Malmesbury for a couple months back in '86, Jean. Your description of the beautiful countryside and historical landmarks just makes me long to go back and visit.... Of course, that's not to mention the wonderful people in the U.K.
Hello Surly,
I agree with Jean. The NHS is very good in UK. Much better than Canada so I've heard. However, housing is much more expensive . The areas that Jean mentioned are the most expensive in the UK. We are talking 200,000 to 400,00 GBP to start. Thats alot of rupees , maybe 12 million . You'd have to sell many books to keep a roof over your head. For all Canada lacks, lower housing costs make up for.
Public transport is a bit more prevalent in UK. Thats because the country is so small. In Canada the equivilent to a intercity train or bus is the airplane. Imagine sitting on a train or bus for 2,000 miles. You see the 2 countries can not be compared in the same ways. Size, geography and population have different effects on both countries.
In Canada you also have the advantage of the economy of scale. We share many items with our US neighbors. Electric voltage, electric plugs automobiles are common making it more economical . It is less expensive to make 10 million toasters with the same electric plug and voltage than it is to make a toaster with several different plugs. many items are less expensive as a result. We both drive on the right side of the road. Uk drives on the left meaning the costs go up.
Just thought I'd give you a few items to consider. Perhaps others can add to my thoughts.

uk!
yes fair point. but you dont have to love in those areas to make a living, what about the peak district, further north, lower house prices. i know that as i live 15 minuet car jurney from there, & its beautifull, same sort of book shop, cheaper propertys. yes i did name expensive areas, but it all depends on what kind of housing you want. there are plenty of places in the uk, where you could sell your books & not have to pay the earth for houseing. what about edinbough as i suggested, beautifull place. also get yourself on the internet, with that type of book would be very popular, i know for a fact. transport & toasters, ill have to give that some thought, im on my way out, so ill come back later. can i just say what we lack in some areas we more than make up for in , scenery, arcitecture, butifull houses , ie in the national trust, they preserve big old houses & open them up for the public to go & see + the gardens are wonderfull. bye 4 now, jean

Surly, both countries are beautiful. Both countries have friendly people who would be interested in your specialty - rare and classical books.
I think I'd just decide which brother (and brother's family) I felt more comfortable about living near. I'd pick the country based on which brother I liked better.

I'm sure healthcare and education will be good in either country and both would offer a rich and varied lifestyle. Other than that, I suspect you'd find Toronto cold and Manchester wet

And what kind of climate you are used to.snamvar wrote:One thing you have to consider is the weather. I lived for 5 years in London and I loved everything about the it except the weather. I know that parts of Canada are very cold, but I would think that you would get more sunshine there than UK. It all depends on your priorities
Maybe you should simply ask your relatives how they like where they live.

weather!
the weather! one thing the uk has, is the gulf stream, so we never get extrems of cold & 6ft of snow, like canada does. my cousin lives in canada & she reports some horrendus winters, minus, god knows what & snow piled so high, for weeks of the winter, whereas we get none of that. yes we do get rain, but that gives us our lush green countryside, but do you know something else, we get some gorgous summers, perhaps not as long as some cuntrys, but lovely & warm never the less. now we are in the depths of winter, but its 9*c outside + its a nice bright day, no rain
seriously though, both cuntrys will have a lot to offer your family, but the uk is worth coming to, i may be wrong, but i wouldnt expect that canada has got the same history, going back quite so long as the uk. with the same brilliant arcitecture, the same wonderfull monuments. our towns & citys are built on the remains of the people of hundreds & thousands of years ago. take york, a fabulous city, you can actualy go down in a small train type of thing, right under the city, to see all of the fairly recently found dwellings of the city people, as it was then, well over a thousand years ago. this type of thing is just an example of what we have. its a great day out for the family & very educational for the kids, as you can see & touch things, and its done out with the smells & sounds of the time and there are dummies, very life likes dress as they would have been in very life like dwellings. its brilliant . this isnt the only thing of its kind. my home town nottingham has a multitude of caves under the city, where people actualy lived, again you can go down there, & that also is an educational afternoon out for the family, schools take the children to see this type of thing, its great for all of us that these things are there to be enjoyed. has i said before, yes im biased + im proud, but ive got a lot to be proud about. i live in a fantastic cuntry & im very lucky jean

I have lived in Northern California for the past 23 years, after being in London for 5 years. I guess I am spoiled as far as the weather is concerned, but I can't stand the fog and rain in London anymore.
I do love the culture, public transportation and the international atmosphere of London. But I can't stand the weather, the food and high prices. It's my choice and I'am sticking to it

fog!
what fog? in the eighties there was fog, yes no doubt, but over the last 30 years the country have been turned over to smokless fuels only, + all the coalfired power stations have more or less finished , so im afraid the fog is no longer an issue! i know that & im sticking with it
Thank You for most thoughtfull reply.
May I impose question. My brother in Toronto opinion is it is more beneficial to emigrate to Canada. If in Canada I may travel to USA to many book show . I may also wish to establish shop in USA as tariff in much less.
Manchester is very large city at very much more dear cost than Canada.
Brother in law in Austin Texas USA tell me many education and business opportunity in USA. Weather much comfortable than other country.
What is opinion of most kind posters . Your experiences are very much interesting to me.
Many Blessing

Mr. Surly Abond,
I am much impressed by your thoughtful consideration of Canada and the UK to emigrate from the fatherland. The costs to do business as a rare text entreprenuer in those countries will be most cosly. I have found in my six years in the USA that it is a land of much opportunity and success. I do much traveling to the Austin, Texas area for my endevours and find it to be a wonderful and productive city. Much like the desires of many in our homeland.
I wish you much blessings in your desired emigration.

Yes Austin is a wonderful city. Located a short drive from San Antonio, Dallas and Houston it would make a wonderful home base for your book business. It is also a "High Tech" city. Your spouse will have no problems finding employment. Taxes are much lower than Canada and UK.
Weather is mild in winter and warm in summer. All the homes and business are air conditioned. There are many book fairs in Austin also.
Good luck
