Bought an Auto
Bought an Auto
I was finally able to save up enough money to purchase an APAP. By purchasing from the US I've saved over $1,000.
Now I'll actually have to learn what all those graphs in Sleepyhead mean

Re: Bought an Auto
Great to see another Aussie rejecting ridiculous Aussie pricing. Pity the AUD-USD exchange has slid considerably in the last two years.
At the end of last year, my DME quoted me AUD$2600 for a PR System One Auto. When I told the sleep tech that I would be buying a machine from the USA, she warned me that the USA machines would only last 2 years. Even if that was true, buying two or even three machines from the USA would still be cheaper than buying one from them!

Yeah I've kicked myself in not really scrimping and saving when the dollar was at parity. I was quoted here in Aus $2,200 just for an APAP. I got an APAP, extra water chamber and a hybrid mask all for $770AUD including postage.TechJungle wrote:Great to see another Aussie rejecting ridiculous Aussie pricing. Re: Bought an Auto
Yes, that's true. Because the water in the toilets spins the wrong way in Australia, it causes the bearings in the blower unit to wear out prematurely. However, you can simply turn the machine upside down and it will work alright in the southern hemisphere. US machines also don't have the special kangaroo hair filters and the special anti-nope coating to keep funnel web spiders out of the hose.TechJungle wrote:When I told the sleep tech that I would be buying a machine from the USA, she warned me that the USA machines would only last 2 years.
Just kidding. Did she give you any explanation as to why USA machines don't last as long as Aussie versions of the same machine?
That's one of the sillier DME lies I've heard, and they tell some whoppers.
We need a thread with a listing of DME lies on the board somewhere.

Re: Bought an Auto
I think you might be onto something there.....running the machine upside down in Southern Hemisphere might just work!

Go through a lot of distilled water that way, though.

It's amazing we Aussies get any sleep at all, eh.archangle wrote:Yes, that's true. As I recall, it was because US health insurance paid for a replacement every two years, so manufacturers' designed them to only last that long.... Did she give you any explanation as to why USA machines don't last as long as Aussie versions of the same machine?

Re: Bought an Auto
US insurance seems to think 5 years is the magic number, but a lot of insurance companies have stopped replacing CPAP machines due to age, and only replace them when they are "broken." ResMed and Respironics sell the same machines in the US and Australia, so I doubt they booby trap the US machines and enhance the Aussie machines.TechJungle wrote:As I recall, it was because US health insurance paid for a replacement every two years, so manufacturers' designed them to only last that long.... CPAP machines rarely seem to wear out in less than 5 years in the US.

Re: Bought an Auto
That subject line sounds like a used car lot name! Good move on the new machine, I think you'll like your new 'auto' and the experience of using sleepyhead. SH is not hard to use once you get it running.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
