Sleeping with a recliner

Post by gavinpreacher » Wed Dec 31, 2014 7:20 am

I have been doing some research about sleeping with the CPAP and other stuff and i read qa number of different things nthat suggested sleeping or resting in na recliner can sometimes be beneficial because of the body position.

Any thoughts or advice guys?

thanks

Greg

As an emergency thing when you don't have or can't use a machine for a couple of nights. I think there are people who use it every night, but they're few and far between.

I tried sleeping in my recliner with the cpap mask on. It didn't work well for me. Gravity made my mouth fall open. Of course, I wasn't using a chin strap.

Get a CPAP, get the software, learn how to use it and optimize your therapy while sleeping in the BED.

No use in making this more difficult than necessary.

i have the CPAP and software. But something is not woprking somewhere for me. I use a full face mask now, as suggested by a friend since I am a mouth-breather. But I am having comfort issues and cant seem to get settled down for a night of sleep. This is the third type of mask I have tried, the others being the wisp and nasal pillows. I was thinking of using a recliner in conjunction with my CPAP, as i presently am sleeping on a futon and it is not the most comfortable of experiences.

Not really sure what else to try.

I suspect that in many cases, full time recliner sleeping is an alternative to a hospital bed.

I kind'a tested your question without knowing it(if I understand your question). I was wondering if I was really getting any benefit from the CPAP. I decided to take a nap, in my recliner, without my CPAP. I used my pulse oximeter to see if there was any difference in my O2 levels. My normal levels are 96% with an occasional low of 94%. On the recliner I recorded an average of 93% with a low of 88%. From this data I would believe that it isn't a trade-off. I hope this may help.

Gavinpreacher,

If you're in a position to try it, nothing to lose since you are already using cpap and the software. Please report your results since this would probably be of interest to other forum members.

I will be buying a recliner in a week or so, and will most definitely post the results as they happen.

Another question, though - as far as the comfort issues i am having with the full face mask, someone suggested to get a full face mask that does not have the piece that rests on your forehead, that it helps with comfort. is this true? What other things can I do to be able to get more comfortable with the full face mask because, as of now, I am getting little to nothing out of my CPAP therapy.

Have you tried mask liners as that has worked for many people? Two choices are padacheek and remzzz liners? If you do a search of the archives, you can find the contact person (Becky) for the remzzz liners, who will send you samples.

Best of luck.

I do not even know what a mask liner is. Never heard of them. A friend had suggested a thin trace of vaseline along the parts of the cushion that actually touch my face.

I've had trouble with cpap not working for me for a while now. I resorted to sleeping in recliner with cpap just to get some sleep. It does help but I just had my first night on vpap and will say it was very nice to sleep in bed

Vaseline is about the last thing you should use as a seal. The petrolatum would be harmful to the mask materials, and would likely cause your skin to break out. Mask liners are frequently talked about on the forum. https://www.google.com/search?q=mask+li ... 8&oe=utf-8

I think your theory of using a recliner as therapy in lieu of fixing the real problem is unlikely to gain much traction here. Some things that might help to know: How many hours per night are you averaging on CPAP? What kind of AHI and leaks are getting? What pressure settings? You might want to update your profile, you still show the Wisp as your mask, and if your machine is outdated, the link will not work, you need to put that into a text signature line.

see that search bar up there? type in 'mask liner' and hit search....

for me, they made a WORLD of difference.

forget the vaseline, it'll make things worse.

Looking at the replies, it seems there is confusion about whether you want to use the recliner alone or the recliner with CPAP.

But it sounds like you have some work to do to make your mask more comfortable.

Here is my favorite FFM - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/RespCa ... -Mask.html

That is the Innomed Hybrid mask. If you decide to try it, don't let a DME substitute the ResMed Liberty.
