First Nite on CPAP

Post by jrc90101 » Tue Feb 13, 2007 10:12 am

Well, last night I started with my new CPAP machine. Let me tell you, it was great and not great... for one thing, it was hard to get comfortable. I normally go to sleep on my stomach and then switch to my side in the nite. Well, I couldn't lie on my stomach. Then around 2 am, the nasal pillows were making my nostrils hurt so bad, that I just took the mask off and went back to sleep. I'm not giving up though, just figure it will take some time and adjustment. Any recommendations on sleep position or sore nostrils???

Jenn

For the sore nostrils use ayr gel. It will help with the irritation. Also be sure the mask is not to tight. For sleeping positions, most find side sleeping is best, the pillow (bed pillow) you use will make all the difference! I use the papillow but everyone has a favorite.
It does take time to get used to all this 'stuff', be patient. For me the first night was the hardest and it got easier from there.

If you can use a nasal pillow (which the Swift is), then a more comfortable one for stomach sleepers is the Aura (Invacare Twilight NP). You would probably need to use the stretchy strap over the nasal pillows, but you would be able to sleep on your stomach and both sides. Here's the link:

And use Ayr, chapstick, or an ointment or cream to protect the nose -- before it gets too painful. Eventually, it will toughen up and you might not have to use the ointment.

Started my cpap treatment on 2/09/07. I can tell you it will get easier. Took me almost 3 hours to fall asleep that first night. I think that I was able to get to sleep in about 40 min last night. So not a bad improvment for just 4 nights.

Best part is that my wife and I have been able to sleep in the same bed again for the first time in 4 years. Now we just have to get used to sleeping next to eachother again

Hey

I will have had my cpap for a week on thursday night and I have to say, I have been fighting it too. The first night the same thing happened to me. I woke up around 6am (I didn't go to sleep until around 4 ^^ I keep weird hours) and my nose hurt so much! I then drifted in and out of sleep for another few hours before I got frustrated. I just took the thing off and went back to sleep. I still woke up feeling much better than I have before though so it must have done something while I had it on. I haven't been able to find the ayr gel in my local drug stores (even though cvs says they carry it) but I found a nasal moistening saline spray that has definately helped a lot. It's really hard to get used to this, but you roll with the punches. I just look forward to the day when I sleep the whole night through. >_<

I'm not giving up either. Good Luck!
