Software Copying

Post by kteague not a guest » Thu Jul 20, 2006 10:34 pm

I wish I could say I always do those things that are right, but lying isn't right so I won't say it. I really would prefer to not keep finding myself in this position, but I was reading along, minding my own "member" business, and found my opinionated self smack in the middle again.

Cpapjack (and Other Posters), I read your prior post a few days ago with the same request. Then your second post to that thread was "Anyone?" I felt bad that initially no one had even responded to your request, then a couple people weighed in although unable to help. With no more activity on the thread, I thought maybe someone had PM'd you and dealt with it privately. When I saw your request repeated as a new topic, I almost replied to say that maybe folks are reluctant to say yes publically due to the legalities. (I see now that's not the case - silly me!) I would not have said it as a judgement, but as a possible explanation. Then I saw a guest had said it, and civilly enough it seemed to me. The guest's subsequent expression of feelings he had originally kept to himself appeared reactionary to getting flamed, and I'm guessing blindsided. Here again I've dodged the bullet then opened my mouth and told on myself. But I just don't think the guest's original post was malicious. Stating the obvious, yes. But that's all. I'm far too jaded to be a Pollyanna, but in the words of someone (in)famous, "Can't we all just get along?"
Kathy
P.S. I considered doing a similar post as a Guest then confess after the dust settled, but I felt I owed fellow members more than trickery or deceit to illustrate a point. Sorry for thinking it.

I guess most of us are character flawed. Dang, why do we have to be like that.
I resemble that remark.

Hey Red, I'll share. PM me.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but the guy who owns this board sells software as part of his living. I guess cpaphijack et al are proud of the fact, and think it's rather funny apparently, that they are benefiting from this board, yet seek to obtain free software, possibly at the expense of cpap.com. Why don't you ask the moderator how he feels about that. It may or may not suprise you that "guest" (me) is a registered member of the board, who contibutes infrequently, but consistently. I knew I'd get flamed for pointing out an issue with publicly posting a request for a freebie. You should have done this via PM with other members who share your equipment. Not as the public slap in the face to the owner of cpaptalk which is the way I see it. I guess if you all need to get together to snicker about the fact that you probably wont get caught doing this, then I guess that's cool. I hope your livlihood never depends directly on the honesty of others. Remember that what goes around comes around.

Guest(s) and Member Posing as a Guest - However many of you there are contributing to these two threads, when you make an valid point then proceed to carry on in a manner that belies credibility, your original cause is lost in the noisy fray. I doubt anyone is tuned in to software piracy now because of the circus sideshow distraction. This forum is not for the furtherance of personal vindettas. I come here for comraderie and information during a very difficult time in my life, as do many others. This mess grieves my heart. An elderly southern-born lady I knew had a saying for when her last nerve was frayed with someone, "GET SOMEWHERE!" Anywhere. Please.

It doesn't surprise me. What surprises me is you didn't share your opinion using your registered name. Such strong convictions are usually accompanied by pride.

I have to weigh in on this, can't keep quiet any longer. Why does a request for help from a fellow hose head have to be turned into such a childish arguement. I'm right ....no I'm right......I'm gonna tell on you!!!! Can't you "adults" see how silly this is? This person has ask for help with his treatment of apnea, not to steal a formula for making an atomic bomb. It's software to monitor sleep apnea!! What in heck is going on here? Can all you self-righteous people who are preaching honestly say you have NEVER broken the law, even a little bit. Going through a yellow light is breaking the law, crossing the street not in a cross walk is breaking the law. Come on folks, our life is too short, and made shorter by sleep apnea, to be having this arguement.

Having been in a situation where I needed help, and could not get it, if I used that software I would give him a copy, period. Last year my computer crashed, lost everything. I was in the process of reinstalling my EncorePro when my daughter and 2 grandkids (10 & 3) came in. I left the computer, went to visit with them and came back later to find that the 3 yr old had gotten his precious hands on the cd and broken it. I called cpap.com (where I purchased it), explained the situation, and was told there was nothing they could do about it. I called the manufactor and was told sorry, can't replace, only to a dme. I said if I were a dme you would replace it for free and they said yes, I ask if I could pay a reasonable price to get it replaced since I had already paid for the license and they said no, they could not sell to me. I then pm'ed several memebers of this forum, all in private, and ask if anyone would help me and was told no. To be honest, that surprised me and stung a little. I would have done so in a second if they had ask me. Anyway moral of this story is, don't expect much help if it requires money, is against someones politics, or just too much trouble. After all we are not all created equal.

And yes Guest, I know it is breaking the copyright laws, but i can live with myself knowing I have helped a fellow human being in need. I hope you can be just as content knowing you have enforced the law and be damned to your fellow man!

Gilda

Gilda, I hear everything you say and agree with it. But, you're missing most of the point of my argument. If cpapjack would have done this privatly through PM etc. this would have never been argued. Life is not black and white, and the person is more important than the law when it comes to their health. I'm for medical marijuana for instance even if that's against the law. My main beef was when he came to a public forum, sponsored by a man who sells software as part of his living, and asks for free software. In my opinion that is an abuse of the board and a slap in the face to the owner of it. I'm a nice and caring guy, just like I assume cpapjack is in real life. I just objected to the way he went about doing what he did, and i feel he owes Johnny an apology and the board as a whole. He does not think he did anything woring. End of story as far as I'm concerned.

Guest, I'm curious to know if you objected when Minerva came to the forum and asked who all wanted to receive free Hybrids. You must have also viewed that as an abuse of the board and a slap in the face to the owner because he sells masks as part of his living. Do you think she owes Johnny and the board an apology also? She owes him alot bigger apology than cpapjack does if you compare the revenue Johnny lost for those masks he didn't sell because of Minerva vs. the revenue lost for the software cpapjack isn't buying.

I did not see that thread. Can you provide a link to it? I would think it would depend on where the masks originally came from. But I don't want to and never assume the role of the board admin. I should never have gotten involved in the cpapjack thing. One thing sort of led to another. It went from me pointing out what I thought everyone knew to a peeing match with not much real debate, but mainly name calling. Never meant to set myself up as the morals police especially when the person in question does not feel that he did anything wrong and is above reproach. I acutally wish the admin would pipe up about his opinion on this whole thing, but so far nothing which is okay as well.
