Maxing out pressure to test mask fit on A10

Post by cathyf » Tue Nov 11, 2014 10:51 am

Ok, I swear I'm not imagining this, but I'm sure that when the RT showed me how to work the machine, she showed me how to make it run up to its maximum pressure to see if the mask seal stayed good. But now I can't find anything in the manual or anything that looks like that on the menus. Is there a trick that I'm missing? Or did untreated sleep apnea cause me to hallucinate the whole thing ?

My leak graph always pops when I hit pressures in the higher teens. Now I have no idea what is happening during those times because I sleep right through them, so I'm just kind of stabbing around in the dark as to what the problem actually is. Is the mask getting jarred loose first? Or is it getting blown loose by the higher pressures? If the latter, then being able to test it at 20cm before I go to sleep should help, right?

that would be on page 7 of the regular manual, not the provider one, at least on the pdf I googled up.

look for 'mask fit'.

Thanks, PR!

Ok, next amusing moment will be me trying to interact with the badly-angled and poorly-lit A10 screen without my glasses on, since I can't wear glasses and mask at the same time... I'm going to have to train myself to do it blind!

get to the right menu, (where all you need is a push to start and stop, then put on the mask.
maybe you can hold your glasses in front of your eyes enough to see... at least the f10 doesn't have a forehead piece, those make it much trickier... though I did put my mask on *after* putting on my glasses a couple of times, just so I could see

I have a magnifying glass that I keep next to the machine, too, but that takes a hand. And then there is the hand to run the dial on the machine. And the hand to adjust the mask... uh... just ran out of hands... (I have this idea for getting one of those sheet magnifiers, and then building a stand for it so that I can put it in front of the machine and read the screen with glasses off.)

I can keep my glasses on with the mask on, too, but neither glasses nor mask fit particularly well. Since I wear progressive lenses, I end up needing to stand on my head to see. Which screws up the mask fit BIG time!

all you have to do is push the dial, you don't have to keep twiddling it the whole time, nor do you have to hold the magnifying glass while adjusting the mask and listening for leaks, you should be laying down while doing that anyway.

You chart shows mask pressure going up in tune with the leaks at the 1:40 to 2:20 timeframe. You machine is trying to overcome the leaks by increasing mask pressure

I'd be willing to guess its not a mask fitting issue at all

The leaks are fine for the majority of the night. Even at it's peak, it is only reaching 26 or so....

I suspect that your leaks are caused by positional issues.... ie... pillow pressing on your mask, briefly sleeping on your back, etc......

The next big questions are;

how are you sleeping?
Are the brief leaks waking you?

*NO NO NO NO NO NO NO*
did I mention... NO?

machines *DO NOT... NOT!* increase pressure in response to leaks.

they increase pressure in response to flow limitations, snores, obstructive apneas and hypopneas.

NOT LEAKS!

in fact, robysue has trace analysis showing machines REDUCING pressure to get the mask to seal again.

cathyf's pressure only hit the 24lpm limit where the machine even *starts* to care for .083% anyway.

her leaks increased because she didn't have a great seal and pressure went up in response to a stimulus that the machine responds to.

bad fish, sit inna corner!!! *waggles finger*

in fairness, it's hard to see without zooming in.

the machines do *compensate* for leaks by increasing the base flow rate to maintain pressure, however.

I have no idea why you're torturing yourself with that range of pressures when it's the Flow Limitations that is driving the pressures up......and not solving the problem.......in fact it appears that the pressure increases are making the FLs worse rather than lessening them.

sorry, here's an icepack for those knuckles...

I wasn't going off on *you* dave.... rather on the oft repeated, but incorrect idea that the machines increase pressure in response to leaks... some of the earliest ones may have but nothing even remotely of recent vintage.

I'd posit that it's not torture if she's sleeping right through it.

where can I get some o' dat torture?

Having to endure those kinds of pressures (chasing Snores and FLs) when you don't HAVE to......is "torture" to me.

hey, if it doesn't wake me up, have at it.

We're talking about cathyf. Having seen her current and past reports and how many times she has to reset/restart her machine to lower the pressure because of the "runaways", I'd call that "unnecessary" at the least and "torture" to some degree.
