What is a PS setting on a ResMed9 BiPap?

Post by CoffeePgh » Wed Jul 16, 2014 4:12 am

My pressure is set at min 6 and max 25. My ramp is 5. My AHIs all average 8.5-10.

For the last week, my Median/Max EPAPs are : 8.56/13.96; 8.54/13.98; 7.06/13.32; and 6.65/15.16. (These are the first readings with the increase to 6.)

What is a PS setting? Mine is set at 4. Is that a constant, meaning that my IPAP will always be 4 over my EPAP? From my readings, I think that it is.

Is there any way to make the PS fluctuate, allowing me to have a higher/lower IPAP score other than 4 over the EPAP? And, do I want the PS to fluctuate?

Or, should I be focusing more on the EPAP numbers and adjusting my minimum pressure so that it is more in line with my median score?

Thank you for the guidance.

With the S9 VPAP Auto bilevel machine the PS is a constant fixed setting even in Auto mode. In auto mode EPAP and IPAP may vary but the difference will always be whatever the PS is set at.
The Respironics bilevel pressure machines in auto mode do offer an auto adjusting PS though.
I am unsure as to exactly why it might be of benefit to have an auto adjusting PS. I have some theories but haven't found any concrete definitive reasons. I have used both brands of bilevel auto machines. In terms of therapy effectiveness I couldn't tell that one way of doing PS was any better or worse than the other. Each has their pros and cons.

What is the event category breakdown for the AHI numbers? Is it primarily Obstructive in nature (OAs and hyponeas) or Centrals?

I don't know that I would fixate on the median score until I determined what the machine was wanting to do.
If the AHI is primarily composed of Obstructive in nature events then (and since your machine seems to want to increase the pressure and it won't do that for centrals) I would target EPAP if the AHI is primarily OAs.

That's a wide pressure range; a minimum of 6cm and a max of 25cm; whoa!!! I'll soon start on a fixed Bi-Level with an IPAP of 22 and an EPAP of 18. I couldn't even feel 6cm; lucky you.
