I have to admit that this is on my mind also. Probably on many of our minds. We live in a nice neighborhood and my granddaughter goes to a reputable school which is also in a nice neighborhood, but... we live in a very different world. My kids ran around the block at age 5 to play with other children. We won't let my granddaughter stand in front of the house by herself. It's really pretty horrible.

I don't see the difference between a male Docter being a Tech in a Sleep Lab or a male Gynecologist or Obstetrician who checks you down below, while being alone, in this regard? Are you, females, not taking a chance?

Avi... if a male doctor examines you "down there" , whenever I have been examined they have automatically had a female nurse in the room ... . so no chance taken

Life as we know it has changed, we can no longer trust the people around us to be moral and good people. Maybe I'm over cautious, probable a leftover from military training and a aware mom. I'm always aware of my surroundings, I keep a 6 ft circle of awareness, more if I consider the area to be threatening. Nowdays I don't have as many options as I used to have, I let my Concealed Carry Permit expire, in hopes the records would get lost in the system.

Life would be less stressful if we Sheeple could, not be aware of the world around us, but I'm not one of those Sheeple, I worry, I prepare, but I also know my limits to control my own surroundings.

One thing that hasn't been commented on: The taking of drugs to sleep at a sleep center, it would be a great place to be Roofied, for me if I was a woman I'd bring my own medicine, although I don't think medicine should be added to thd night as it adds a unrealistic result to your sleep apnea. Jim

49er:
> What if your sleep doctor isn't affiliated with a hospital wants to send you to the center they operate?

Sending a patient to a "lab" (broadly defined) owned by the doctor is illegal in some states. They were racking up costs for unneeded procedures.

> if there is another sleep study, it will be in a hospital type setting

I have never seen a sleep center "in a hospital setting."

The ones that I have seen have typically been in simple storefronts in some strip mall. It's all about costs. Cheap rent.

The overhead in hospitals is _huge_. That's why the MSRP for a night in a hospital can exceed $15,000. Even the contract rate to cover a night in the hospital could exceed the cost of the sleep study.

I wouldn't object to a sleep study in a hospital if insurance paid the bill, but I'd be surprised at that.

That post should raise awareness that now of days the creeps are every where and proceed with caution.

I'm certain that the two examples you cited are excellent facilities. Better than excellent, even.

Both are also _teaching_ hospitals. Maybe not a coincidence.

Cornell:
"Our testing rooms are tastefully decorated private rooms, each equipped with a high-definition TV/DVD, wireless technology, and a private bathroom."

I've had a private room for all my sleep studies, but never a "tastefully decorated" one, lol. Nor an HD TV, DVD, wireless, or a private bathroom.

Something to look forward to, I guess, as long as there's no 300 lb guy in sweats and flip flops named Vito.

You can bet the insurance companies are gritting their teeth on this. "We can fly you to Mississippi and back for a sleep study and save money."

And of course there's no assurance that these facilities are on everyone's in-network provider list. They would sure be nice though.

> Hospital like setting

I, personally, have never seen a "hospital like setting" that wasn't in a ... hospital. No one else has the money to spend. In a teaching hospital they can justify it as a teaching facility for their doctors-in-training.

Comment,

I have seen no female TECHs in the labs during my 4 sleep tests. But in 1961 when I was checked by a male internist, on Longwood Ave in Boston, there was a female nurse outside the door and the Doc told her my vital readings, in a load voice, thru the slightly open door.
Dr Stevens, you were a great Doc!

Yes this was mandatory for me as the first sleep lab's wall paper did not match any of the furnishings. I remember thinking "how can I sleep in a place so horribly decorated"

My Tech was a female... professional and appropriate. I wasn't going to "sleep" in a strange facility with a strange man, with strange wire like things attached to me. I made sure of that before I went for the study.
