Rape topic?
Rape topic?
Must we continue to see this topic as the very first one we encounter every day when we visit this site? Whether or not the rape allegation is true, is it really germane to discussions about CPAP use?
Re: Rape topic?
It is an unpleasant topic. But some find comfort in the exposing of aspects of it, and it can be difficult for people to learn proper reactions to the topic if it is never discussed in public.
It is the nature of the Internet in lightly-moderated public forums.
The issue hits close to home for some of the posters in that thread due to their family experiences and professions, I think. Sorry you find it irritating to see it.
The relevance, I believe, is that many of us have had sleep studies and will have them again.
Just my take.
The thread will die eventually. They all do. Even emotionally charged ones where not everyone trusts the sincerity of all posters.Instead of denying that a problem exists or blaming the survivors, let us educate ourselves and plan how to respond to that dreadful moment when a student, co-worker, or friend tells us that she or he has been sexually assaulted. -- http://womeninastronomy.blogspot.com/20 ... in-us.html

Re: Rape topic?
I would say that it is germane to discussions about the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea since the woman says this happened during a sleep test.dinycat wrote:Must we continue to see this topic as the very first one we encounter every day when we visit this site? Whether or not you choose to believe her story, it is still a valid warning to everyone about what could happen and I applaud her for wanting to warn people of what could happen at some of these questionable sleep centers.

Maybe, just maybe (and I can't believe I'm saying this), this site needs a little monitoring.
Apparently, anything can be posted.
I happen to be a writer, so I'll get to work on it.

I am not being part of the thread. The subject pushes too many buttons on all sides. Brings up to much experience.
It should have been dropped, closed a long time ago.

Re: Rape topic?
I have no thoughts as to the accuracy of the story, but I prefer to believe that the woman is just trying to be helpful.
I will admit that the first time I went in for my study in April, that was one of the thoughts that went through my head as I followed a lone gentleman into the center. I soon found out there were two techs there, but the next morning one of them left earlier that the other. They were both very professional, but I can easily see the situation she describes.
If for no other reason that to let folks know that awareness is always a good thing, it was relevant, but it should not keep going indefinitely. It's time for it to rest.
Just my 2 cents

Remember, rape is violence, sex is just the weapon of choice for complete losers.
Violence can happen anywhere, any time.
As distasteful as the subject is, awareness and preparedness is our best defense.

If we get lucky a deranged producers son, will go from one sleep study to the next and shoot up the patients and rapist sleep techs, then lead the keystone cops on a street chase, until fate ends it. Then we can talk about it forever, promoting hundreds of kids that would never thought of doing it, to give it a try. Jim

IMHO, that's it in a nut shell. My eyes are open now in a way they weren't when I had my sleep study in 2011. In fact, if there is a next time, I'll be sure that I'm in a hospital type setting where there are many people around.jnk wrote:IThe relevance, I believe, is that many of us have had sleep studies and will have them again.

IMO this is the biggest concern. Making people aware of danger can be helpful, but we must be sensitive to ladies that have trauma associated with these kinds of horrific events.BlackSpinner wrote:I am not being part of the thread. Re: Rape topic?
Correct. I doubt that there is one woman on the site who doesn't know the dangers of being around MEN in general, never mind sleep labs. Not one hasn't been treated like an object, fondled against her will, harassed in school or work or even been subject to rape. Most women live day to day with the reality that any man, known or unknown, is likely to abuse her sexually in any place and it will be considered her fault and often her abuser will be considered a hero of some sort. It will be her fault that he lost his career, his freedom, his family, never mind that it was his choice to do it in the first place. And then people expect them to go into a bedroom with a strange man and sleep. Hey guys, walk into a room, any room, you have too but there is a 75% chance you will be shot at, what are you so uptight about, it is just a small bullet, whimps!bavinck wrote:IMO this is the biggest concern. What if your sleep doctor isn't affiliated with a hospital wants to send you to the center they operate? Agree a hospital setting would be safer but I just wonder what the protocol is.ems wrote:IMHO, that's it in a nut shell. My eyes are open now in a way they weren't when I had my sleep study in 2011. Re: Rape topic?
I agree with Sludge that having more than one patient at a time is generally the way to go.
I was highly impressed by the respect of the male tech at my sleep study when I heard him wiring up the female next door. He would say, "Do you want to move this strap over to the other side or would you like me to do it?" and "I'm ready to put this lead in place now right there; is that OK?" He expressed what he needed to do but let her be in full control of every movement he made, asking her if she was OK and comfortable every step of the way. He was a big guy. And he treated me differently from the way he treated her. He even changed his complete demeanor when addressing her, almost stooping and moving very slowly and quietly.
There is much about a sleep study that can be awkward and feel like an invasion. For any of us. Wires and straps can make us feel trapped. And fear of the unknown can make any of us skittish. I trusted my PCP to pick the lab. He knew the sleep doc by reputation and had heard good things about the place.

49er... I don't know what the protocol is, but if a doctor insisted that I go to a center they operate, I would go to a different doctor. In 2011 I did go to a center that was operated by the doctor. This doctor, as well as the center, was highly recommended by another doctor I trusted. It worked out fine and the fact that the sleep center was five minutes from my house, didn't hurt either. However, if there is another sleep study, it will be in a hospital type setting.49er wrote:What if your sleep doctor isn't affiliated with a hospital wants to send you to the center they operate?
