I think I know what RLS feels like. Ugh.

Post by BleepingBeauty » Wed Feb 05, 2014 11:05 am

Hi, everyone.

I'm not saying I have Restless Leg, but I think I now have a better idea of what it might feel like, and it isn't fun.

I injured my right leg last week when I fell off a stepladder. I'm surprised and grateful that I didn't break the bone. My leg is very colorful at this point, nine days later. You can see some of the bruising starting to show in this pic. It wasn't as bad as it sounds - little pain, little blood, but a big open wound and a trip to the ER to get 27 stitches.

Image

Anyway, my leg has been twinging and very itchy for the past couple of days (which I know is a good sign of healing), but it wouldn't stop twitching the other night; kept me awake for over two hours. I kept shaking my leg to try to calm the twitches, but it didn't help. Took pain medication and also got out of bed several times to try to walk it off, but neither of those helped, either. It was annoying as hell and very frustrating. I was *so* glad to finally be able to fall asleep...

I'm sure it's not the same as RLS, but it's as close as I've come to what I think it's like. Those who suffer from it have my deepest sympathies.

Last year was a difficult one for me, medically. I vowed that 2014 would be different, but I didn't even make it out of January unscathed. I get my stitches removed tomorrow (yay!).

Hope everyone here is doing well.

Hello, old friend! Sorry to see you are injured, and to hear you had a bad year medically.

Itching I can understand with a healing wound, but not sure why the twitches, unless it's due to a medication you're on for it...

Hope this year will be a better one!

Hey girl, so sorry you started of the year with such a big boo boo. Good to know you are still alive and "twitching"

Hey, you! Long time no hear... Speaking of which, didn't you owe me an email ages ago?

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope the rest of the year is less "active" in the health issues department for me. The bright spot is my therapy is back to normal now and I'm sleeping well (aside from the twitching).

Thanks, Brenda. Yep, I'm still kickin'.

As far as this injury goes, I'm looking at it as just another scar to add to my collection. At least this one's in the shape of smile.

Hello BB.

I could have done without the "visual aid", but wishing you a speedy recovery to your "Boo Boo".

Good to see you post again.

Hey old friend, that is one wicked looking wound! Hope it heals quickly, and that the twitchy feeling goes away as it heals. Maybe you've now got this year's crappy stuff out of the way.

My memory fails all this time later, too, so no biggie. Hope you and the family are doing well these days.

Hey, Den. Nice to see you still hangin' around here. Sorry for the visual, but thanks for the good wishes. I hope I'm getting my stitches out today, but a friend said that stitches around the shin usually need more time. I'll find out later this afternoon when I see the doc. The ER said 10-14 days, and today's day 10. Fingers crossed.

Hi, Kathy. I confess I thought of you (in particular) when I felt like I was experiencing RLS. That video of you "night dancing" is stuck in my head. I had the same twitchy symptoms last night, but they didn't last as long (thankfully). I sure hope this satisfies my "allotment" of medical problems for the year. Thanks for that hopeful thought!

Hehe, my own little minion. That didn't occur to me, but I love the minions, so that makes me happy. Thanks, Chunky.

Gracious, BB, that looks dreadful!

Hope you heal quickly... and next time, DON'T fall off the ladder!

Thanks, Kira. I won't be getting up on any ladders anytime soon (if ever again). I think the fact that it was a stepladder (with nothing to grab onto) was part of the problem. A regular ladder would be more sturdy, but everything can wait (and it will).

I did get the stitches removed today, and already my leg feels less "tight," so that's an improvement. The twinging is still driving me nuts, but the doc says it's to be expected in the healing process. It's bad enough during the day, but the zingers when I'm trying to sleep are really annoying. I hope that ends soon...

Onward and upward (but with no steps involved).

Being the sort who can trip on a level floor, I bought a Little Giant three step ladder which has a hand bar which can swing up to grab hold of.

Glad you got the stitches out, Zinc & Vitamin C can help with healing.

BB,

So good to see you posting again. I had wondered recently about you and how you are doing.
You know when you don't post for a long time, people may think the worst. There are many of the old timers we never hear from again. My hopes and prayers are that they are getting great therapy and do not need the support of this forum. Hopefully they are out in the "real world" encouraging people to use their CPAP and sleep better.

Sorry you had a tumble, with a gash like that I wonder what the ladder looks like now. Hope you heal fast and the RLS symptoms abate.
Hugs to you gal.
Karen
