Report on last night's experiment using the Swift FX nasal pillows and its traditional headgear along with the new Nano short hose.
The new short hose seems to fit just fine in the nasal pillows. Seems to seal just fine. It's been a long time since I have used the Swift FX nasal pillow mask and traditional headgear...I started the Tap Pap on March 3 I think it was and never went back to the Swift FX pillows. So I can't really offer any comparisons as to functionality of the short hose or if it seems hugely different. I thought the older hose worked just fine. Remember I choose to not use any sort of hose routing system anyway. I just drap the long hose around the top of my bed pillow so it is laying on the mattress and I am done. Always start out the night on my left side which makes my back to the machine. I turn to my right side or on my back easily and never really notice the hose anyway.
The few times I have tried routing the hose sort of overhead...my headboard is old wrought iron headboard with scroll work so easy to route it upwards....I found it more of an annoyance than a help. It's just my personal preference and in no way do I think that routing overhead is problematic. Hey, if it works for you I am all for it. I just don't personally care for it so never wanted to add more stuff like the hose buddy or whatever.
I did fine last night. Slept well. Woke a few times for unknown reasons...back strap slid up at least once and I had to pull it back down.
Remember I am known to wake up some from back pain itself...still out of my amitryptilline so I know that's a possible issue.
It wasn't a big deal though. Wakeups were minimal and went right back to sleep. Mostly I think it was just the fact that I had headgear on and haven't been used to it and I probably didn't have the fit just quite perfect. It was brand new Swift FX pillow headgear and that always took me a few nights of tweaking to get the back strap and top strap to fit just right when using brand new.
A few leaks..some might have been nasal pillow sliding around (used the XSmall last night) a bit when the back strap moved and some were likely a little mouth breathing. None were huge and none woke me up to a blast of air or anything like that.
Is the new Nano hose a HUGE improvement over the Swift FX pillow hose? Not HUGE IMHO but it is an improvement and for someone still having issues with flexibility or hose tugging issues...worth a shot to try it to fix those issues. Sometimes the least little thing makes a huge improvement in results.
Below are my reports from last night and I include SleepyHead leak graph just to show it. It looks more exciting than it really is due to the scale involved. The highest the leak ever got to was 48 L/min. My large leak territory number to avoid is around 90 L/min with my machine at my pressure. So I was well below that number and these leaks didn't wake me up that I remember. No air blowing where it shouldn't be blowing.
The vent holes on the new hose are in the same place as the old hose and for some people they aren't going to like it. I am used to the placement of the vent holes and the direction (not all that different from placement of Tap Pap vent holes) and I just keep the bed covers away from the vent holes. It's something I have done for years so it is just second nature to me. I also keep my arm away either by moving it or simply putting it under the covers. Again just second nature or habit from the years with the Swift FX pillows.
I am going to put further Nano gear related experiments on hold for a while because I have some family issues that require me to have best sleep possible so no more experimenting for a bit.
In general I think the Nano cushion and its new hose are keepers for sure. I had much better luck with the Nano than I did with the Wisp which caused nasal congestion to the point I simply couldn't sleep with it. I plan to keep both the cushion and the Nano short hose...never know when it might come in handy if I can't use the Tap Pap. The Tap Pap remains firmly seated as my number one go to mask. I really, really like the no headgear part of it and the nasal pillows never ever move. So any leak I see I always know is mouth opening leak. Doesn't wake me up though and not huge or prolonged...so I just don't care to worry about it.
The Nano cushion with the Bella Loops is doable..probably would take a few nights of tweaking to get the loops just right but it is for sure doable which was a big surprise to me. I thought for sure the added weight would be a big problem bit it really wasn't.
As with any mask...one man's treasure is another man's trash. Not everyone is going to like any mask...we all have our own preferences and needs and things that are the most important features in a mask. Minimalistic headgear happens to be extremely important to me. Less on my face...as in nasal pillows vs over the nose mask..is also important to me.
Some people don't like the force of the air when using nasal pillows..I happen to like it. So the new Nano comes with the usual YMMV sticker and to know for sure if you will trash it or treasure it you will need to try it.

I may have to RISE but I refuse to SHINE.
