aromatherapy for cpap is it effective?
I am wondering how effective these are at helping one relax at night?
I've just finished leaving a massage therapist's office today (slipped disk due to falling on some ice.... ugh what a winter)
While I was having my session they had candles going and they actually got me to the point I fell asleep!!
I've been seeing a tonn of posts about people wanting to put oils in there humidifier's and such (which I am well aware is a huge nono but then I see people recommending cpap aromatherapy, but I have yet to see any posts on how effective it is.

Scent is a powerful and primitive memory hook.
You now associate a scent with massage and total bliss relaxation. Use this particular scent to help you relax. The brain is a wondrous thing when you learn its tricks.

An international team of scientists, including researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, describe how burning frankincense (resin from the Boswellia plant) activates poorly understood ion channels in the brain to alleviate anxiety or depression. This suggests that an entirely new class of depression and anxiety drugs might be right under our noses.

I hope you heal up and your winter improves .
I have been using aromatherapy since day one on PAP therapy. I find it really relaxing and also it can help with the occasional stuffy nose due to allergies or sinus issues. The ones that I know about are Pur-Sleep and SnuggleScents, though I have only purchased Pur-Sleep aromatherapy/essential oils. My favorites are 'Clear', 'Spice', and 'Peace'.

From the product description, you do not put then oil in the humidifier tank. Wild be afraid that if I disliked the scent, it would be in the tank forever and if it turned out it made me sneeze, I would be in deep doodoo.
Pur-Sleep is a line of holistic aromatherapy products designed specifically for use with CPAP machines. Simply set up the Diffuser in front of the CPAP filter, place a few drops of Essential Oil on the Diffusion Pad and use your CPAP equipment as you normally do. The Pur-Sleep Diffuser lightly scents the air with one of several fragrances as the air is drawn into the CPAP machine. Vapor Clear uses the power of Eucalyptus and Lavender to help improve sinus congestion.

Re: aromatherapy for cpap is it effective?
I have been using aromatherapy for a few months now. Like the previous poster said -- you put the oil on a diffuser disk and place it near the air intake on your machine.
I purchased numerous scents from Bath & Body Works, including Peach, Apple, Cotton, Fresh Linen, etc. I find the fruit ones are the best for me. I also like a Lavender & a Vanilla scent I purchased at cpap.com. What I AM finding is that Bath & Body Works scents aren't as strong, which for me, is a bit better. Sometimes the Lavender & Vanilla can be almost too strong and a little overpowering. When this happens, I simply move the disk further back from the air intake.
For me, the scents ARE calming and relaxing and do allow me to ease into sleep easier and more quickly.

Re: aromatherapy for cpap is it effective?
I purchased a Pur Sleep starter set from cpap.com to try it, out of curiosity. I've used it a few times.
I can't see myself using it regularly, probably because on a normal night I mask up and fall asleep within 1 minute, and if I do wake up during the night (which is rare) I am not aware of my mask or cpap; it feels like normal breathing to me now.
I think the stronger scents might be helpful if nasal passages are slightly closed, but I can't verify that at this time.

Re: aromatherapy for cpap is it effective?
Pur-Sleep has a wonderful sampler so you can try all their aromas to see which one/s work best for you. I can't actually 'smell' the aroma after a few minutes, however DH (who works 2nd shift) said he can smell the oils when he comes to bed around 3am, even before he opens the bedroom door.
For me - the Pur-Sleep aromatherapy absolutely relaxes me, particularly ones with lavender.
If you had such a good reaction to the candles during your massage, then it makes sense that you will have the same experience with using aromatherapy with XPAP - try to find the same scent as it was so successful for you.
Cheers,
xena

Re: aromatherapy for cpap is it effective?
I have been using essential oils from pur-sleep and essential oils from Now Foodshttp://www.nowfoods.com/Products/Produc ... 100-Pures/. The oils from Now Foods are distilled oils very similar to pur-sleep. My question is regarding the oils from Bath & Body. I checked for essential oils at the local BBW and they did not have any essential oils. The oils that they had are home fragrance oils which are in their candles and can be use on a warmer or diffuser for home fragrance. Question(s) is should these home fragrance oils be used on a diffuser pad with cpap? If these are not the oils being use I would like a link for the oils from BBW that can be used.Madalot wrote:I have been using aromatherapy for a few months now. Those ARE the oils I am using. I've had no issues with them and actually prefer them since they aren't quite as strong as the others I've tried. I love the Lavender I got on cpap.com, but it is seriously overpowering when first applied. I have to move the disk way back just to breathe. I never need to do that with the oils I'm using from BBW.bearcatx16 wrote:I have been using essential oils from pur-sleep and essential oils from Now Foodshttp://www.nowfoods.com/Products/Produc ... 100-Pures/. Re: aromatherapy for cpap is it effective?
Thanks Madalot, I picked up Lavender Vanilla & Eucalptus Mint while I was at BBW. I will give these a try, however, I may just place a drop or two on a pad and place in a room just to see how my nose reacts before using with cpap. As a rule, for me, non nonessential oil, i.e. room fragrance oil in candles and odorizers causes a bad reaction with my nose and causes my asthma to react.

I bought the Pur-Sleep variety pack, and my favorites are still the
Fresh rain and Lavender candle scent oils I got at Hobby Lobby For about $3 each.
Caution--no more than a drop or two; I use a 1/4 of a cotton make-up pad on a tiny saucer.
The scent lasts for days.
