Employer is stepping up or is Big brother???

Post by Kenneth P. » Mon Dec 10, 2012 8:19 pm

I drive for a top LTL Company..They have started a new program for there driver's.They are covering all test, equipment, supplies,&doctor check-up's.This will make it easier every year with the new DOT Medical Law's that are going through. But,I alway's ? thing's like this.I take care of my stuff&make sure I see my doc. before my dot physical. My insurance cover's 80% of supplies,etc..Mask are replaced every 6 month's& so on..So free will be nice..But we will see.The lady I talk'd today to said that our company is one of the very few that is covering everything. But,the catch is they will now have full control over my managing&SIM Card..Has a CDL driver you are required to show compliance inorder to keep your medical card current. So we will see.

Hi - Sounds like a great deal if they're honorable. Could be a bit invasive if they want to push issues and use them against you, but I'd give it a chance because they may turn out to be helpful if and when you need it - you won't have to hide things or try to convince them of problems if you do run into trouble. Let us know how it goes.

I can say that they do look after there employee's.So really sound's good. The big problem I have is they will have control over SIM card. But,on the other hand instead of once a year seeing my doctor to correct isue's.The healthcare group will be monitoring me year around so if they see a problem it can be address'd.Hope it is has good has it sound's

There's nothing stopping you from making a copy of the SD card. and giving it to them or keeping the copy for your use and letting them have the "original".
What are they going to be doing with the SD card that would be any different from what you would be doing anyway to satisfy compliance?

You might want to stop in at apneasupport.org and check into the sticky they have specifically for truck drivers. A.W.A.K.E. has a group especially for, about and comprised of truckers that is linked there.

Nothing. But,now my doctor download's once a year. All he does is fill-out letter showing i'm in compliance..Does not have to show any result's..But,I'm worried the way it will be is they will be monitoring alot closer.Which I understand. It need's to be..So I quess like you said it's not going to matter.

You should not worry.

1. Your company needs drivers to stay in business and make a profit.
2. Your country needs you to transport goods.
3. Your company is not going to fire all the drivers because ... see 1.
4. As a conscientious member of cpaptalk.com you should be way ahead of the other drivers. You will be the least of your company's worries!

Ditto this and add -
5. Your company wants to keep it's accident rate at zero or near zero - they don't want drivers falling asleep at the wheel and causing death, injury and property destruction.

Cheers,

Bonus! It might be easier to get them to spring for a "work" machine if you run long hauls.
Wherever you stop, you need to sleep RIGHT!

I think this is a good idea. If its a requirement for work then it should be covered. The monitoring if done correctly should not be a problem. For something so important drivers need to be able to sleep and be safe.

Are they going to have control over which machines you may have and work with a DME so if you want a fully data capable machine you can't get it?? Will you have repercussions for adjusting your own pressure? Those would be my concerns.

That is a really BAD thought!
I'm sure somebody is stupid enough to do that.
Talk about cutting off their own noses!

IMHO, that is EXACTLY what will happen.

If the so called "experts" tell the company the S9 Escape is all that he needs to provide the company with the compliance information they need, guess what he will be provided with.

And since those same "experts" believe & will tell the company that pressure canNOT be changed without the Sleep Doctor providing another prescription, I can forsee the company terminating someone for changing their own pressure. Not like those changes can be hidden from the company since they will have access to everything.

Hey, folks, THINK about this! Do YOU want to be on the same expressway as a sleepy 18 wheeler driver when you are in your smaller and smaller car???

The professional drivers are aware of the risks and the majority have elected to take an active part in protecting their rights as well as your lives and theirs and A.W.A.K.E. has gotten active and has a group of drivers making sure that their input is part of the process. For the most part the companies are supplying fully data capable CPAPs, they are looking for more than compliance, they are looking for EFFECTIVE therapy. Not all companies are supplying the equipment. There is a move afoot to assist independent drivers in getting their equipment. Over the road drivers have some unique needs using a CPAP and truckers for a cause ensures that those needs are known to the authorities.
