Re: Can a Hiatus Hernia be caused by years of high pap pressure?
today there are many many reflux medicines on the market, most of which actually heal ulcers. 40 years ago when i first started getting serious hiatal hernia pains and reflux, the only relief available was basic antacids like rolaids and tums that heal nothing. sometimes i would take so many rolaids because it hurt so bad that i would throw up the rolaids. there was a rebound effect. you take rolaids which is an antacid, then you produce more acid to make up for it and require more rolaids over and over til you're taking them by the handfuls and still getting pains. it was a terrible time to live with hiatal hernia and reflux. at that time, ulcers weren't disolved by meds, you were opened up and operated on to fix the ulcer. if an ulcer perforated, a person could die if they didn't have emergency surgery. i think the breakthru drug that dissolved ulcers was tagamet. over the years they have kept coming out with newer and better drugs that do it in progressively better ways. today i take 1 nexium and 3 sucralfate a day to control the pain and so far it is working.Guest wrote:

Is it OK to rant about spellcheck, now?

Great Uncle Bill that sounds absolutely awful! Thank you for the explanation. I am very new to the world of Hiatus Hernia and hope what I have, is not the same as an ulcer!
My stomach is still killing me, even as i am writing this. Nothing seems to help, I recon that they have perforated something during the investigatory procedure!
Cos there was no pain before the procedure and now there is.
Wish I had not had the investigation done!!
Before the procedure it only hurt once a day for 3 or 4 minutes if I ate a mouth full of bread, NOW it hurts all day every day!! I am NOT a happy bunny!
ChunkyFrog how interesting I never noticed the spell-check in the left corner!
Did it grow there overnight or maybe you just put it there when I wasn't looking?

Re: Can a Hiatus Hernia be caused by years of high pap pressure?
i didn't mean to imply you have an ulcer. it's just that among other things these newer drugs heal ulcers. if you are having alot of pains where you didn't have pains before, you need to get back in with the doctor asap. if you can't get in, go to the er. you just don't go from occassional pain to constant pain. something happened or something is wrong. call the doctors office now.sleepinglass wrote:Great Uncle Bill that sounds absolutely awful! Risk factors include:
Age: 50 or older
Obesity
Smoking
Pregnancy
Abdominal injury
Increased pressure in the abdomen from:
Severe coughing
Vomiting
Straining
Sudden physical exertion (eg, weight-lifting)
Sorry for the levity but WOW imagine if you had all these risk factors...

Re: Can a Hiatus Hernia be caused by years of high pap pressure?
Believe me I am seriously worried, so Friday I went
to the doc reporting the pain, as I have it now for almost 2 weeks.
She said not to worry. Pain following the procedure occasionally happens.
Take some more anti acids 'there, there, everything will be alright! Pain will go soon!!'
How can she know that the pain will go soon? Presumably she must be psychic!
I would be really annoyed to kick the bucket just now, as a result of all this!!

Re: Can a Hiatus Hernia be caused by years of high pap pressure?
I couldn't help but think who hasn't had more than a few of the risk factors in day to day life.
Pregnancy....I puked my toenails up 24 hours a day for 5 1/2 months. That takes care of several of the risk factors right there.
I had an endoscopy done last Dec due to some persistent heartburn and some food getting stuck on the way down...yep...small hiatal hernia along with the GERD..with my age and history not a big surprise.
Sleepinglass...are you still using the maximum on your APAP? Maybe the procedure stirred up some really bad GERD or aerophagia and your higher pressures are aggravating things (causing more aerophagia)...perhaps limit the maximum for a few days and see if things settle down. I had a wee bit of discomfort after my procedure because they sort of pump extra air into you so they can see things better but it should dissipate after a couple of days unless perhaps you are continually adding more air by the higher pressures. Just a thought...I could be all wet again.

Recovery time is not always proportional to the size of the incision.
Your doctor probably gave you a list of things NOT to do--best not to do them.
Smokers have extended healing time, too; and a number of other factors may be contributing.
We don't know what bad habits you may have (if any ) which could affect your healing,
but now would be a good time to work on them.

Hi Pugsy
I am currently using my machine on autopap limited to 9-16 pressure range so hopefully it is not contributing to the problem. I am not aware of having had acid reflux before because as I have never experienced any symptoms, no burning or anything. I wonder if you can have it and be asymptomatic?
Chunky frog you will never believe it but the doc said diddly squat and sent me away with no information whatsoever, just not eat or drink for an hour, followed by a swift good bye!
Mind you I had 2 biopsies which I believe should be minuscule, not sure I would call those incisions though

Re: Can a Hiatus Hernia be caused by years of high pap pressure?
Holy crap, you had an endoscope with biopsies without sedation? I feel for you. Did not realize that they had biopsied anything. Not sure but since that involves actually cutting away some tissue I imagine that there could be some residual pain but I wouldn't think it would last this long. When I had my endoscope done I opted for the happy "I don't care" drugs. I didn't have any biopsy though.
Yes, it is possible to have GERD and not realize it with the traditional symptoms. I think it is called Silent Reflux or something like that.

Re: Can a Hiatus Hernia be caused by years of high pap pressure?
I did not have the happy 'make me forget' drug which next time I definitively will have!
However after having had the procedure I have watched so many gastroscopies from all over the world on U Tube and even though the gag reflex I realise varies from person to person, I think I was VERY unlucky as:
1) I was not even offered a gown it was done in the clothes I walked in from the street!
2) The drool from my mouth and stomach went all over my arm, shoulder and my shirt was totally soaked so had a disgusting wet arm for 2 hours following the procedure!
3) My belt that held my jeans up was really tight and I could feel the camera pushing against my belt pushing against my tummy walls, with no way for me to loosen my belt as I was just so focused on trying unsuccessfully to breath.
4) The doc could not get the camera down my throat and tried for ages, think I may have been his very first guinea pig and he was a doc in training.
5) Unlike the videos on U Tube where the person being subjected to this, gagged now and then, I gagged uncontrollably throughout, totally unable to catch my breath, in constant pain both in my stomach and my throat.
Just unlucky I guess! Any body else experience what I went through?
Do we generally find it more difficult to breath cos of our breathing issues??
Mind you I am beginning to feel pretty angry about my experience right now!!!!
