I google "hiatus hernia", and my spellcheck keeps changing it to "hiatal hernia".
The idea of a hernia while on hiatus makes me giggle, as we are most likely to take it easy then.
(Maybe injured while mounting/dismounting a hammock?)

Hiatus hernia is a correct term. CPAP won't cause it unless the diaphragm is already compromised. Poor core strength and GERD are far more likely causes.

Hiatal hernia is used in the UK.

Since hiatus, or hiatal, hernias are more common in people who are overweight and/or over 50 years old, it is reasonable to expect a high incidence among CPAP users, IMO.

The majority of people with HH don't even know they have it unless they have symptoms...usually GERD related.

That is what my new PCP (Wholistic MD) just told me. I've EGD done before, but my last one on 3/23 indicated I now have Hiatal Hernia, have been on CPap pressures of 18 since 1998... Now this..OMG - so Yes I believe my GP told me correctly.

Would be interesting if there was some real research to prove it, holistic medicine does not qualify.

It was more likely caused by OSA rather then cpap. Or vomitting. Or coughing. I had mine long before I got on cpap and was a big relief to got my cpap. The pressure is going into keeping your throat open, not down to your stomach unless you have a problem with keeping that air out of your esophagus and that is a different problem.

I happened to come across this post, seems old and I haven’t surfed through everyone’s responses.
I was on a bipap at a pressure of 27
I was getting gastric pressure from the air inflating my stomach.
I firmly believe this had a huge play in my hernia Tear as the Inflated intestines pressed against it and eventually popped out of the hole. I have since lost weight and had surgery 3 yrs ago.
I didn’t need the machine until recently I gained a little bit of weight back.
I have been on a cpap with a pressure of 7
But my gastric pain has returned and I’m currently feeling like I may have another stressed wall that could be a hernia or making of one.
I’m pretty concerned since I didn’t want to think this was the issue and I need to be on this cpap

A hilarious hernia is caused when you hear a joke so funny, you literally bust a gut laughing.
One can only have a hiatus hernia in Australia.
Elsewhere, it is called a hiatal hernia; and a hiatus is a sort of vacation.
The Australian spelling of esophagus (oesophagus) makes me a little ill.
I need to go lie down . . .
