Waking up every 5 minutes!

Post by newyorknative » Mon Feb 27, 2012 6:32 am

I have been having a problem for a few years now that would happen maybe once a month or once every other month, where towards morning, I would sleep for about 5 minutes (dreaming) then wake up. After a minute or two, fall back to sleep for 5 minutes (dreaming), then wake up. I will often do this for an hour or so before just getting up for the day and calling it quits. It has been happening more often lately. It almost always happens around the time that I would be getting up anyway. I am retired so it is not like I have to get up at a certain time in the morning. Does this sound normal?

BTW I use my cpap faithfully every night. I was diagnosed with a pressure of 10. My auto pap goes from 9 to 11.

It used to happen to me quite a lot, actually.

Since CPAP, it began happening only in the AM, and even that's been tapering off now (1 year into therapy).

I'm not entirely sure why it happens, so I can't help there, but yes, I have experienced it.

Mike, I am so glad to hear that I am not alone. Everyone I have asked said that they do not even know what I am talking about. Maybe it is not so weird after all.

This happens to me fairly often but mostly only in the last hour or so before I finally get up.
When it does I often see an increase in "events" but I don't panic because I suspect they aren't the real deal but instead are semi awake events that get flagged because of erratic breathing while awake.

I really didn't know which one to check. That happens to me but usually at the beginning of the night and not really associated too much with dreaming although occassionally I'll dream I'm falling.

Do you practice good sleep hygiene? What does the software show about the effectiveness of your treatment? How does the leak line look? Event line "towards morning"?

This may be the critical element. How many hours are you trying to sleep each night?

Part of good sleep hygiene is going to bed and arising at the same times each night. Are you doing that?

If you are sleeping late some mornings or going to bed early some nights it will affect your sleep the next night!

I'm going to bet that this is your problem.......and, you're sensitive to pressure changes.
Do you ever look at the software reports? You should be able to get some clues from them.
During REM sleep (which is more prevalent towards morning), your breathing changes and the APAP misinterprets it and messes with the pressure changes and it disrupts your sleep.
It happened to me every time I've tried to use one of my APAPs in a range of pressures......I was constantly waking up.

Set your machine to CPAP mode at a fixed pressure and see if it goes away.

By the way, you have the wrong machine in your profile. It's showing an old Legacy model "Plus" and that is not an APAP.

If you're watching the clock turn it around or put it out of sight.

Tonight i will try setting my machine to 10 fixed to see if helps. I do have an unusual sleep pattern. Because of nasal congestion I will frequently get up in the middle of the night for an hour or so, and then back to bed. So these 5 min deals are usually after having been up for at least an hour. That may have something to do with it. My theory was that you produce hormones/chemicals that make you sleepy in the evening. Then in the morning you produce hormones/chemicals that try to wake you up to meet the new day. So I may be trying to sleep while the hormones are trying to wake me up. Just a theory! I fixed the equipment listing in my profile to reflect my true equipment. Thanks.

Mr. Monkey, I have good sleep hygene I believe. My software does not show anything out of the ordinary during the 5 min deals. No major line leaks. I go to bed at about 10pm each night. I do get up EVERY NIGHT at 1 or 2 am for about an hour with a congested nose.

Pugsy, the software shows nothing out of the ordinary during that time.

OMG! What people will leave out of a story!

Don't you think that may be your main problem? Why do you tolerate it? There are things that can be done for congestion.

What setting do you use on your humidifier?

I use a humidity setting of 1 out of 5 (low). The problem occurs when my nose in clear not stuffy. I have done everything short of surgery for my congestion and it does not work accept for Afrin which should not be used too often. I am not into surgery.
