Waking up with humidifier full??

Post by doety » Wed Nov 09, 2011 4:40 pm

This seems very strange. I fill the humidifier every night, above the line, and when I get up in the morning and take it to dump out, it seems there's barely any water gone. Every once in a while, it's totally gone -- but more like once a month. Can you think what on earth is going on?

What setting is your humidifier on? What equipment do you have?

cheers,

Glad others here will have answers for you but I'm wondering why you empty the humidifier? Mine is filled every other night because it empties half a night but I always just top it up and never empty it unless I am going to clean it (which only happens every few months out of guilt...not because I think it needs it. I used distilled water and the reservoir looks new.

Anyway, sorry to hijack here but wondered if others empty their tanks as well.

I'm going to guess you have a Philips Respironics System One machine (sometimes called "Remstar"). These have a very efficient humidity control system to prevent rainout, and if you have any relative humidity in your home they use very little water. I can go a week before refilling my tank.

I am new to this but on my machine even though you set a level on the humidifier you still have to turn it on each night. If I forget to turn mine on the water level doesn't change even though it remembers the humidity setting.

Just to continue your hijacking , the ResMed instructions tell you to empty it every night. Like you, I just top it up, but I clean it every week.

I was also thinking that possibly the water level would not drop much if the room humidity was high. Are you in a Florida swamp, or an Arizona desert?

check with your partner to see if they are playing with you by secretly topping it off or emptying it out during the night?

Umm, I don't have your exact machine, but are you sure about this? I think these machines are pretty "idiot-proof" (no I'm not commenting on your intelligence!). One button turns everything (blower and humidifier) on or off. These machines are very efficient with the water use. The more relative humidity in your house, the less water they use. So the only times I have seen a significant drop in water levels is in VERY dry weather, and also when I run it in "classic mode"--which increases the heat a little bit during the winter. Otherwise, a filled tank lasts a week or more.

I never have to press a separate button to turn on the humidifier once it's set at the level I want.

I refill mine as needed (every other day) but clean it once a week. Bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments...I feel better cleaning mine regularly

Yes Janknitz. My unit has a separate heat button that must be turned on for humidity. It also shows on the display when the heat is on and it only comes on when the heat button is pressed.

I do it like you do, Elle... just adding more distilled as needed; never dumping the unused water out for months and months at a time.
