Contour pillow: do you like?

Post by napstress » Thu Apr 21, 2011 4:28 pm

I am a side sleeper who just became aware of the existence of the Contour CPAP Pillow. Side sleepers, do you like it? Where can I buy one in the least-expensive way?
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm

Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!

The pillow can make a big difference if you're a side sleeper. Ordinary pillows dislodge the mask when you move.
I bought one of these and it did help:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/CPAP-M ... illow.html

but I got better results with a Tempur-pedic neck pillow

When I rest the top of my head on the high side, the mask has plenty of room in the "valley."

the contour pillow looks very interesting, but, $60?! $99 for the tempur-pedic? Ohhhh I don't think so! I actually have one LIKE the tempur-pedic, I have no idea where I got it from, many many many years old, but, realistically, I get my best results from sleeping on my arm.. laying sideways or even better, facing straight down, with my arm kinda in a V around my face (I use a nasal mask, so I don't really need lots of room) and sleeping like THAT, straight down, I get the best sleep almost always, no Apnea events.....

I find the Contour pillow to be a great help. I can easily sleep on my side without distrubing the FF mask.
Can't help with a cheap supplier as I am in Australia - I bought off ebay in the US.

I use down pillows, 2 older ones in one wide pillow case, I don't want any foam door-stops with holes in them, that's, to me a waste of money. In fact, there is some evidence that a lower pillow (more flat) helps the neck angle to be more open and the airway to be too. I cut it down to 1 (2 pillows/one case , but I'm bald so maybe some of you can sleep on Motel 6s foam, we take our own pillows on trips:~))

I use one of the cheap contour foam pillows from Sams club. Works great.

The pillow is firm enough that I can put my head right up to the edge. Mask is actually hanging off the edge of the pillow so there is nothing pushing against it.

The pillow is narrower than a normal pillow, which actually helps when I roll over. I don't need to reposition the pillow.

Ditto what wjp said....A inexpensive foam contour pillow works great for me...a side sleeper.

I am a side sleeper ---I use the down filled pillows I bought at Costco ---love the down filled ones as you can punch them down and shape them any way that you want them. I love them. They are like 39.00 AND WASHABLE so try that instead of buying "special" CPAP pillows. I would not buy a pillow that you cannot wash. some people use the same pillow for years??? Yech!

Napstress, I have a contour pillow and I like it because of the square edges.
But I also have a "travel pillow" that I like as well or better. It measures about 10 x 14 inches. I turn over alot and when I do, I am at or close to the edge so the pillow is not pushing on my mask and I don't have to adjust to get to the other side of it. I think it was under $10 and came with a case.

I bought a small memory foam pillow to use with my Cpap and it works great....doesn't dislodge my mask when I turn over and is very comfortable.

I bought a papillow - expensive - ouch! I really like the shape but it was way too firm. Then I took some of the filling out, then I took some more filling out. It was still too firm. The filling they use in this pillow is really weird - it looks like tiny pieces of chopped up plastic bags.

So... I took the pillowcase from the papillow and filled it with filling from a $9.99 pillow from BB and Beyond. Much better!!

You could just buy the papillow pillowcase ($16.99 or so) from cpap.com and fill it with something you like - the foam pieces mentioned here sounded good. The pillowcase does not keep the shape quite a good as the pillow itself but the pillowcase is quite nicely made and it gives you the basic shape. . Takes a bit of seamstress work.

I saw a Side Sleeper Pro in a store the other day. It even has an indentation for your ear! Felt pretty comfortable from my 10-second test. Has a zipper for washing the cover, though I didn't care for the fabric--too thin and repugnantly white.

I was thinking of buying a cheap memory foam pillow and cutting a portion out of the side for the mask.
