Power Outage

Post by xenablue » Mon Oct 18, 2010 8:10 am

What does one do when there is a power outage, particularly if it occurs during the night? Do we just hope that the lack of air wakes us up?

I am quite concerned about this and as a complete newbie, didn't think to ask about this at my appointment last week. What brought it to mind was a short outage on Saturday during the day.

I don't see anywhere that my machine has batter back-up.

Thanks,
Xena

Currently, the resmed s9 needs an inverter to convert a deep discharge marine 12 volt DC battery to a sine wave AC current for use by the machine. These two parts are available from Wallmart of Batteries Plus. The battery is heavy and needs to be kept in a charged state. The humidifier should be set to pass over mode by turning the humidity setting to 0.

That's exactly what has happened to me a couple of times the power has gone out. I wake up, realize that the "pressure is off", and take my mask off. The equipment (specifically the masks) is setup to prevent suffocation, so there's no danger there.

Personally, I usually get up and walk around at this point hoping the power comes back on.

Search the CPAP Wiki (see the top), and the board for John B.'s complete listing of power backup options.

Thanks for the reply, Rolf.... now, would you mind repeating that in English please? LOL j/k - I'll run this by hubby, I'm sure he'll know what it means.

Cheers,
Xena

As another member here wrote, you WILL wake up when the power goes off on your machine. I purchased a battery back up for both hubby and me. We will have to run our humidifiers in Passover mode if we are running on battery back up, however. We also keep our back up batteries charged full at all times so that we are ready any time. Here is what we purchased: http://www.amazon.com/Duracell-DPP-600H ... 674&sr=1-7. It contains three three-pronged AC outlets (480-watt continuous / 600-watt peak) to power multiple devices, appliances and tools
Contains one DC outlet which can be used to both power devices and recharge the HD600 unit
Built-in 600-watt power inverter, 5-watt flashlight, overload/over-temperature protection and reverse polarity detection
Sealed, non-spillable 28 amp hour AGM battery and detachable alligator clamps for jump-starting cars (up to 8-cylinder); refer to users' manual for charging instructions
Built-in AM/FM radio and digital alarm clock

We haven't had to use them yet, because since purchasing them our power has only flickered on and off - withing a few seconds. However, last March we had a Noreaster that wiped out our power for about 6 hours or so. I feel better being prepared.

Best regards,

Jersey Girl

Thanks Tielman! I feel much better knowing I'm not gonna suffocate in my sleep just because the wind decides to blow and knock out a transformer!

ResMed has promised --and then "delayed" release of a DC power supply for all S9's for several months!
I suspect that there will NEVER be an emergency power supply made by ResMed.
According to their website, an ordinary inverter will risk damage--a TRUE SINE WAVE INVERTER is required--
They are much more expensive than the cheapies you find at Wal Mart.--And they are rarely considered medical equipment.
This lets insurance, and possibly Flex off the hook.
I warn anyone with a particularly unreliable electric supply to AVOID ResMed S9 series until they have solved the problem!

Hi,
I just got off the phone with resmed tech service. The S9 series do not require a pure sine wave inverter. The machine will function on a 150 watt inverter with a modified sine wave. ResMed CPAP in their other series do need a pure sine wave inverter of 300 watts.

Thanks for your responses - much appreciated.

Gee, Rolf - that's good to know, thanks.

I'm going to have to extend our bedroom into the porch to fit all this electronic gear.........

Cheers,
Xena

Xena,

You can register with MyResMed and after wandering around their web site find a number to call them and ask for tech support (1-800-424-0737) after negotiating the number menu

Xena...Just to prove that you will not suffocate, put on your mask, attach it to the hose and lie down without turning on your machine. There is an anti-axphixia valve built into all masks that will allow you to breath. I also agree that the sudden drop in air pressure when the power goes off will wake you up.

I have mine connected to an APC Back-UPS. These are used for Computers and have built-in batteries that allow you to shut down your computer in case of a power failure. Mine is 300 watts and should run my CPAP for at least a couple of hours.
Here is a link on Amazon, although you can pickup one at Wally World or Best Buy.

LSAT, Now that you mention it - when I was first trying to get this contraption working last Thursday night, I had the mask on but the machine wasn't running and yes, I could kinda breathe, but it was like breathing through thick, tightly woven fabric.
