Just to prove that you will not suffocate, put on your mask, attach it to the hose and lie down without turning on your machine. There is an anti-axphixia valve built into all masks that will allow you to breath. I also agree that the sudden drop in air pressure when the power goes off will wake you up.
However, for me, that won't work, as I am using nasal pillows and tape my mouth shut. This is one of the main arguments against using my technique and for using a full face mask; because I don't have an asphyxia valve! However, my nose won't tolerate the ffm and I was leaking though my mouth, so tape it is.

So...to help with this problem I got a power outage alarm, which will beep in my room if the power fails and wake me up, if poor air supply doesn't wake me. Here's the Amazon link:

We found a sale on batteries, and we'll be buying one this weekend. We have the inverter. Thanks Rolf, for the link to the battery info. Timely subject as we head into Winter!

Below is an e-mail I cut and pasted, but the picture won't transfer? I am not as puter literate as most of you here, can't get the picture she sent to transfer, but the picture she sent me shows a different brick than my 110 volt one. Still waiting (but won't hold my breath....unless I am sleeping... ) for a part # and retail price. She is claiming there is a 12 volt converter out now. Maybe somebody has a better contact. john

I have heard there was supposed to be a 12 volt cigarette lighter plug converter released for the S-9 Autoset this summer? Will there be one available soon, or do I need to find another unit for camping? john

Thank you for contacting ResMed. We have just recently come out the product you are looking for. Please refer to the battery guide attached, and you may order through your medical provider.

Thank you,

Living out in a rural area we experience several power outages a year here. While I have a M series Cpap that runs on 12Volts directly but adding an inverter would be just one more piece of gear. I run my system off of a 85AHr Deep Cycle battery that is charged by a float charger. I have run both my Cpap and humidifier for 4 nights on battery without charging as a test and several weekend camping trips. I have used this system continuously for 9 months now through 3 power outages that I know of(after the fact) maybe more, I just sleep right through them. For me this system works wonderfully because use it both every night and for camping.
For just a backup I would recommend something similar to what I use for my computer equipment. Get a used commercial UPS from Ebay or a computer trade fair, etc. The better units do supply a modified sine wave and the older units will invariably have bad batteries (two 12Volt ). I picked two of these for ten dollars apiece for 1100watt output units. After removing the old batteries, I added some extra wire and hooked up two lawn tractor batteries bought at 19 dollars each. With proper maintenance. I get about four years out of the batteries about the same I would get out of $120 set of replacement batteries that have less power.

Here is a link on Amazon, although you can pickup one at Wally World or Best Buy.

I don't know about the recent APC's but the older one I had was WORTHLESS for using with my CPAP, despite the fact that It would allow the machine to run for a hour or two. it had a horridly LOUD alarm that went off the entire time anything was drawing power from it while the electricity was out. And no way to shut it off.

Had no power for over a week (10 days) once due to an ice storm.. First 2 days I went without sleep. next 2 days I struggled through the weather to go to the in-laws who still had power.. after that My son rigged up my anchient CPAP to run off a car battery we hauled across the street to a neighbors everyday to charge which allowed me to get through the rest of the time, I am thank full we a had gas kitchen stove and water heater or we would have really been hurting.

They REALLY Need to have a battery backup as part of the overall CPAP/Bi-PAP/APAP package, after all what our insurances and we pay for these machines they SHOULD come with them.

Oh yea. And yea even though the masks/machines come specially made so you can't suffocate. Within 30 seconds of my machine going off I am awake lol.

Over the years my family's learned if they need mom to get up fast and I'm having a bad spell where I fall back to sleep without waking up fully. Just turn off the machine.
*Me sits up fast* whaaaaaaat the h%#$ ..!?!?!..

Thanks so much for all the great replies - I'm gonna love my time here!

My IT guy is about to replace our battery back-up units so I'm going to make good use of his offcasts. In the meantime, I'm copying and pasting most of your responses and emailing them so my hubby can get some ideas.

Cheers,
Xena

I use a battery backup system. It works quite well. This setup does not run the humidifier when using the battery backup unit. But if you have an Resmed S9 unit, the humidifier would work. Hope this helps:

Just so that I'm clear on this, you always power your cpap off the deep cycle battery and that the battery is always being charged by the float charger (even when the cpap is in use). Is this correct?

Is your heated humidifier also powered by the battery or is it connected separately to a 120vac outlet?

What are the specifications and manufacturer for the float charger that are you using?
I'm workin' on it.
