How do you stop bouth breathing?
Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
Hi, I use 3M micropore tape at first but it was so hard to get off I switched to blue painters tape.It seems to do as good as the 3M, both come loose and leak during the night.
Thanks so much!

Sister, that's why I went with the PapCap. I had success with Painters Tape for a long time. You know, pursing my lips tightly before affixing tape. Still, saliva broke the tape free and out came the air.
Sometimes, I need a break from the PapCap because some pressure points will get sore using it literally months. I go back to the painters tape for few nights. It's still a good solution, but PapCap is better, in my opinion.

For what its worth, I also can't seem to stand a ffm. I've been trying to use the FP Forma, and it feels okay, but my nose gets terribly stuffy in it. I've gone back to my Swift LT for Her and tape. I had been using the 1" paper tape then I tried some 2" paper tape, 3M Gentle kind, and had a terrible time getting the adhesive off my face. It sure held my mouth shut, though!
Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
I can't help but believe the reason many of us breath thru our mouths is because our nose is either congested or has a deviation which just makes it easier to breath thru the mouth. It then becomes 2nd nature to simply open the mouth to breath. Without even thinking about it.
I started out with a FFM because of mouth breathing. After searching and reading this forum I was more aware of my breathing, esp. while awake during the day. If you breath thru your mouth while awake - you will certainly continue after going to sleep.
I have been using nasal pillows now for about 2 yrs and tried my FFM last year when I had a cold. After 20 minutes I took that thing OFF and used some Vicks top help clear my sinuses then put the Headrest back on. Once I got the humidfied air flowing I didn't have a problem.

It was my understanding that sleeping with your jaw dropped open is not 'natural'. Of course, if your nose is clogged you'll breath from your mouth.
I've always speculated that the same relaxation of muscles which bring on apnea may additionally relax the muscles in the jaw. Somehow, the brain is letting those muscles in that part of the body relax too much.
Just my two cents

Skylark....
I've been using the 2" Blue #2080 Painter's tape for two or three years now......and I love the stuff. It beats the heck out of having to put up with a full face mask.
You might want to try removing the tape by pulling slowly...parallel with the surface of your face. I apply about 14" of the stuff (three pieces) every night....and I have absolutely no problem with adhesive residue in the morning.
Whaever you do, don't try removing the tape by pulling perpendicular to your face. Not comfortable!

Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
Sister,
I'm a back sleeper and my mouth always pops open even though my sinuses are so wide open you could drive a Mack Truck through there. I experimented and changed one thing at a time and watched my numbers for a week before I made the next change. The end result? I changed headgear (from the Swift FX to Opus 360), and use a $2.00 sports mouth guard, and a chin strap made from an ACE bandage. Hubby says I look like 'The Mummy', and mumble like one too. You gotta find humor where you can in dealing with this thing.
The last three nights leak rate has been 0.0L each night. It used to consistently run in the upper 20's to 30L.
Sorry you are having trouble after working on this for so long. Hope you find your solution real soon!
Cindy

Hi Cindy,
I tried all these things, no leaks whatsoever from the mouth, however my data still shows a high leak rate[0.66/ls. very confusing!
THanks so very much, I'll keep working on it!
GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
I have a dumb question....14 inches OF TAPE every night? whatever would you do with 14 inches of that? I'm new to the whole taping thingee, sleep doc suggested it, but I wasn't able to figure it out. And pulling perpendicular to your face, you mean pulling it off horizontally across your mouth?Gerald wrote:I've been using the 2" Blue #2080 Painter's tape for two or three years now......and I love the stuff. Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
Thanks. I fold the ends of the tape over so I have something to pull with, but dang, that is some sticky tape. The wider tape does seem to help counteract the drooling problem, though. I may have to try the painter's tape. My sleep doc told me he has a patient that uses duct tape. That just gives me the heebie jeebies.Gerald wrote:Skylark....

Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
Junebug.....
Your question is a perfectly reasonable one.
And the answer is.....
I actually use about 16" of 3M #2080 Blue 2" tape every night.
I apply two 3" pieces of tape first....one 3" piece on either side of my nose....each piece about 20-degrees tilted from vertical......the upper ends about 3/4" below each eye....and the lower ends terminating at my chin. These two pieces of tape are to help seal the deep "age creases" on either side of my mouth. The pattern looks like this: \/ with my nose in the middle.
Once the vertical pieces are secure, I tape over them...from side to side...almost ear to ear...just below my nose.....with a 10" piece that has the ends folded under for "handles". The pattern then looks like this: ------\-/-------
I learned that using just enough tape (like about 4") just to cover my mouth won't get the job done. It's easily blown off with 10.5 cm of pressure.
I need about 3" more tape on either side of my mouth to hold pressure and prevent "blow off". There are "engineering" reasons for this configuration...it has to do with "compression" sealing across the mouth.....with assist from more tape that is being pulled sideways ("in shear"....engineering language).
This rig is quite comfortable....and is much better (for me) than trying to wear a full-face mask.
Taking it off in the morning is easy...comfortable (because I remove by pulling parallel to my face).....and conveniently fast.

Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
Ohhh, that's a lot of tape. I'm gonna ask my broker about 3M stock.(tee-hee)
Seriously, I use the blue stuff, too, only, I use a 2" long piece of the 1-1/2" tape vertically
over the middle of my mouth after I put poli-grip strips in the corners.
I found that the poli-grip was too sloppy at full width, so I cut it the long way first,
saving half for another night. I then cut or tear it in half the other way, lick my lips, and paste my yap shut.
Something about that get-up gives my husband the giggles.

Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
The VA juat gave me a Ruby adjustable chinstrap and it works great (but thick). I had a thin respironics chin strap that I misplaced when I moved that was more comfortable and worked.
Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
A chin strap didn't work for me. My lips still came apart and let air out.xsquid wrote:The VA juat gave me a Ruby adjustable chinstrap and it works great (but thick). I had a thin respironics chin strap that I misplaced when I moved that was more comfortable and worked.
Did I see some "class action" lawyer commercial about side effects of Poligrip??
Re: How do you stop bouth breathing?
This is the respironics chin strap I really like. It's light and goes against my bottom lip and keeps it against my upper one. I like it better than the Ruby one.

Not a great pic, but kind of shows how it goes up and supports the bottom lip:
