How do you stop bouth breathing?

Post by sister » Tue Oct 12, 2010 6:53 pm

Help! I have been trying everything i know for the last nine months to stop air from coming out my mouth without much success. I have had UPPP and i feel this is c-pap air being forced out the mouth that should go down the throat.
I have read that you can train your mouth to stay closed by putting your tongue up in the top of your mouth but I am not having much luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Have you considered taping your mouth shut? A lot of people have success with that.

HI, yes use tape and a wide chin strap [Deluxe chin strap] and sometimes tape and poligrip denture adhesive.
When I go to sleep there are no leaks but usually when i wake up the tape has loosened some,i don't know how long it's been loose.
My leaks are high, last week's data the leaks were 0.68.
Thanks so much for your help, I cannot wear a full face mask.

It could sounds silly but I notice I mouth breath when I make acid reflux. I make acid reflux when I take supper after a certain time in the evening or eat too much green vegetables non cook (like a big salad) or a big meal with greasy food like cheese or other .

Solution: other than check the time and kind of supper, I did the following. I thought to keep my tong closed to my palate before falling asleep. I put a small amount of surgical paper tape (like 1/4 inch wide X 1 inch long) in the front of my mouth to keep it closed and create a pressure and a feeling of something taping my mouth.

It works, as good as taping the whole mouth but without the inconvenience of having marks in the morning. And after a couple of days I didn't need the tape anymore. Another trick is to use a small pillow or a towel to put against your your chin to create pressure and keep the whole close.

If my nose becomes a bit stop up because of the allergies it can make my mouth breath.

1st I think you have to make sure your nose is clear and you can breath thru it or else you are wasting your time. Do this every nite before bed. Search for nasal rinse or using a Neti Pot.

Then it will just take time to unlearn bad habits. You didn't get where you are in a day or a week, right?

Make an effort to breath thru your nose during the day. You will likely find that you don't but don't even realize it.

Focus (even daytime) is part of the learning curve too.

Good Luck

Have you never tried a full face mask? It is the 'ideal' way to be able to continue mouth breathing (when you're asleep you don't know for sure if the tongue trick works after all - except for those who've been lucky enough to see consistent results over time) and still get therapy. I've used an UltraMirage Ff for years and it works for me.

You may just need a full-face mask. My brother-in-law has used a nasal mask exclusively. When he has nasal congestion, he just sleeps without his CPAP, which is not good. He visited me this weekend and he used an extra Ultra Mirage Full Face mask that I have. He loved it, was surprised that it was not the claustrophobic torture-chamber that he expected, and so I gave it to him, with the proviso that he promises to start sleeping with it every night.

You might want to consider trying a full-face mask. Then you can open your mouth all that you want.

Tony

I found when I cut a tiny slit in the very center of the tape about this long ____

that my tape would not come lose from coughing, burping, etc...

I used superband sports tape..

I cant use a full face mask either, its just not an option, so I understand..

eventually I quit opening my mouth, and I dont need the tape anymore.. no more dry mouth.. terrible for your gums and teeth I learned.

Sister, I've used Pantyhose Stockings, Chin Strap provided by DME and blue painter tape. By far, the most superior solution is the PapCap.

The PapCap minimizes pressure points yet keeps the mouth shut. A very snug fit but far more comfortable than a traditional chin strap. And, the Papcap can be used to hold the mask on instead of traditional straps.

My favorite part of the PapCap is a loop on top of the cap that tightens. You run the hose threw it so when you toss and turn at night, the hose isn't being pulled, causing leaks.

Lot's of folks on cpaptalk.com use it....

I hope your generating Reports every morning and monitoring your leaks. Mouth breathing can really take away from your therapy.

Good luck,

SG

That's funny - I don't see anything saying (in the orig. post of this thread) that she cannot wear a FF mask.

Why not? You may surprise yourself. My brother-in-law felt the same way. Just asking.

Best wishes,
Tony

Julie.....

In her 2nd post, Sister mentioned that she couldn't use a full face mask.

Sister........

Please let us know what tape brand and width you're using....and how you are applying it. That info may give us a clue as to why taping isn't getting the job done. The more info we have, the better we can help.

It's in her second post.
