NOT Categories, *TAGS*, and a poll...
NOT Categories, *TAGS*, and a poll...
Categories, my friends are so passe... we have Tags on this board, have had them for about 2 years now, and if we start using them to tag posts, we can tell people to search by tags.
Unlike categories (' this post belong there you $%^&, not here"),Tags will let one post belong to many categories, and thus help people who search.
Next time I spend 30 minutes or so composing a response, I'm going to tag it -- something I've never done. I hope others decide to do the same.
And I suggest that when anyone has been helped by a post -- they tag in for what it has helped.
Thank you, unadog, for the dissertation that made me think of that.
O.

Is Tag Topic an Admin/Mod Function?

Maybe you're thinking of another type of forum? I've never seen tags available on this one? You could add keywords to the bottom of the posting and the search would pick it up, although I know that's not quite the same thing as tags.

Re: NOT Categories, *TAGS*, and a poll...
Howdy,
We do support tags. We implemented the feature with the cpaptalk redesign a while back but it was not used.
If its broken will fix it and if its clunky, I'll field suggestions and improve it. Which website should they work like?
Tags at a good idea.
Johnny

The "Tag Topic" button seems to work only occasionally. But worse than that, there doesn't seem to be the easy way to access the tags any more.johnnygoodman wrote:Howdy,

Anybody still wondering why this site gets so much loyalty? If its broken will fix it and if its clunky, I'll field suggestions and improve it.
I can't say what site they should look like, but I suggest that once tagging is fixed, we'll have a way for members submitting /updating a tag list that we think is useful.Which website should they work like?

I wonder if the system could have a kind of "this helped me" tag, in which a person who was helped could tag somebody else's post in way the author didn't think of. If not, we could of course PM one another tag suggestions.
I doubt we even have to vote about submitted tags, since a tag selected in real life is one voted for - the more times used, the more useful it is.
If the selection list get too humongous, you can cull off the unused tags once in 3 months or so...

Actually, I was using it a LOT when I first joined, but I think that was before the redesign. It was my main search tool.ozij wrote:I guess we weren't ready for it at the time --johnnygoodman wrote:We implemented the feature with the cpaptalk redesign a while back but it was not used.

Was that "Topic Tags" or "Bookmarks"?LoQ wrote:Actually, I was using it a LOT when I first joined, but I think that was before the redesign. What does a Topic Tag look like?
I thought they could only be placed by Moderators or Topic Authors.

I've used both tags and bookmarks to find posts again, though the tags were more useful to me. I say "were" because I can rarely find them now.
I've never been a moderator here but I tagged several threads so that I could find them later. The tags helped me to find a group of posts quickly on some subject that I was interested in. The search function brings up ANY thread using the word, which may be incidental to the thread itself. Suppose, for example, I put the following words in each post:
CPAP APAP BiPAP bilevel apnea hypopnea ahi hi ai index sleep rem machine resmed mask respironics fisher paykel swift ultra mirage quattro nasal mask full face mask cpappro.com no-mask sleep weaver sleepweaver hose climateline aussie hose slimline swivel battery data software resscan encore viewer remzzz remzzzs strapguard pursleep puresleep CATEGORIES category oximeter spo2 so2 oxygen tube pillow comfort buckwheat hull aroma therapy sleep doctor respiratory therapist quick disconnect back-up leak rate pressure csa frustrated night obstructive sleep apnea central apnea hysteria etc.
You get the idea? If I put all of those words in each post, and if I were a prolific poster, you can see how useless the search function would become. It already has a bit of that uselessness to it because of what I mentioned above. Fortunately, there are no idiots out there doing as I did above, so the search function remains partially useful.
But tags are the web 2.0 way --- at the very least, we should be using this web 2.0 feature until we get to web 3.0 or whatever the follow-on is called.
In the next generation, it won't be "I want categories" that will be heard throughout the halls of this forum, but rather "I want tags."
At least "tags" is quicker to type than "categories," so the flame wars should not take up as much space, and maybe we can buy a cheaper popcorn popper for carbonman.
Re: NOT Categories, *TAGS*, and a poll...
Using tags means everyone can have their very own "personalized categories". Sounds like a win-win. Until you realize, to use tags - you have to know how to search. Many still don't know where to find the search options on forum pages.
I think that may be why many propose the use of categories. IF you can search you don't need any bloomin' categories.
search.php once you've used it you can just type search in the address bar or when on the forum Home Page just enter "/search" AFTER cpaptalk.com

That was actually my point. I guess it didn't come across very clearly, huh.
