Hybrid/Liberty comparison, please

Post by chunkyfrog » Sat Jul 31, 2010 10:05 am

I test slept the Liberty mask (small cushion/pillows, I think), and had huge leak problems; can anyone tell me how the shape/size differs with the Hybrid mask, especially the amount of arc across the bottom. (chin area) I love my FX, but have to tape due to a stubborn yap. Please help.

HI, Frog.

Short answer: I've tried both and sent both back (I bought the insurance).

No dents on my forehead or nose, but I simply couldn't get the pillows to stay put. I didn't try all the suggestions here (ladies' tights, scrunchies) but I did try taping them into my nares. Maybe I gave up too easily, but I was missing a lot of sleep, so went back to a nosebag + tape.

The liberty came closer to working for me, but I'm sure that's an individual thing.

Hi there,
I tried both of these, and I really liked how the hyrbrid fit on my chin, but the nasal pillows were the accordian style and a total disaster for me,
even though we tried all three sizes of pillows..

The Liberty was great for the nose pillow part as they were not the accordian style, but it hurt my upper lip so much I couldnt take it, so they went back..

Im still with my first mask the f an p nose pillows and opus 360 headgear, but plan to try the swift LT or a sleepweaver soon.

goodluck, I know its hard to find a good fit!

I have both. I use the Liberty every night and have a Hybrid fit and ready as a back up. The leaks have not been a severe problem for me. When i do notice leaks getting severe, I take that as a sign to change the seal and nose pieces. I sleep on my side primarily, but like a lot of folks, I never know how I will be when I wake up.

I guess I need to rephrase the question:
I tried the Liberty (small cushions), and it fit uh, OK, except the cushion in front of my chin stands out too far and doesn't seal well.
Is there any possibility that the Hybrid might work better with a little bitty chinny?
I'd also be curious about the headgear comfort level, as the liberty cheek thingies dug into my face.
I'm pondering buying a Hybrid and attacking it with a Dremel tool and 2-part food-grade silicone--(or mack's earplug goo)
create my dream fit mask--bwahaha!

I've tried both. I love my Hybrid. The chinflap makes all the difference for me, keeping the mask seated and my mouth closed all night. I didn't like the side straps on the Liberty (or the clips, for that matter) and find the Hybrid far more comfortable. I do employ a fix to keep the pillows in place and leak-free (viewtopic.php?p=446053#p446053), but it's definitely worth it for the great therapy I'm getting with the Hybrid.

Bottom line: You won't know how the Hybrid works for you until you try it.

For two masks that seem so similar, they are night and day for me. I liked NOTHING about the Liberty and almost everything about the Hybrid (although I do cut the chin flap off and have a fix to help the pillows stay in place). They Liberty caused pain on my upper teeth, I hated the clips on it, and wasn't crazy about the headgear. And it also leaked like crazy. And I tried more than one combination of pillows and oral cushions. I was really surprised at how badly it worked for me compared to the Hybrid.

Have both. Love the Hybrid, can't make the Liberty not leak/be comfortable. I think they fit/feel very differently. Which will work for you depends on your particular facial anatomy. Padding the straps makes for more comfort and fewer, less deep strap marks in the morning. I use a small hair scrunchie fix to help keep the pillows snug.

I've been using the Liberty successfully for a couple months. Tried a Quattro and a couple other FF masks but my in between sized head (must be small as the straps top and bottom have to be extended fully) and irregular small jawed face make sealing without leaks a very tight and confining proposition I couldn't live with. Point being that unique head, face, and nose characteristics really make this find a mask that is comfortable, doesn't leak, and provides good therapy, endeavor quite the quest!
After reading the many posts about the Hybrid I elected to pay of pocket and try one. I spent hours trying all the sizes that come with it and none are as leak free as the Liberty for me. With the flaps on,, my mouth would open when relaxed and the jaw would pull the mask down enough to disengage the pillows. With the flaps cut off it's improved but the pillows angle is changed again. (I like the Liberty pillows better as they are double walled as they enter the nose and therefore tighter inside when inflated somehow) I have an overbite on the top teeth and this somehow affects the angle of the pillows on the Hybrid so they aren't aimed directly into the nares. (aim away from the face or "up") On the Liberty the cushion is more fixed (flexes a lot more on the Hybrid) at the top and this helps seal both the pillows and the top lip better in my case. I do use the "tights fix" with good result on the pillows to remain leak free in all movement scenarios.

I find the Liberty to be slightly more "refined" in fit and finish, but will keep the Hybrid as backup. (I've ordered a small sized headgear for the Lib which I may use to modify the least fitting one for use with the papcap attachments)

Hope this helps you or another!
