Cant get Encore Pro 2.3 64 bit to install in my vista PC

Post by blakepro » Wed Jul 28, 2010 11:45 am

Can anyone offer some suggestions? I finally obtained the 64 bit version of Encore Pro 2.3 but when I tried to install it, it failed. (I have a windows vista 64 bit machine)

I noticed I had several versions of .net and sql installed, so I removed ALL instances of them from the computer, rebooted, then re-installed .net 3.5, then .net 3.5SP1. Rebooted, then tried to install and it seemed to get farther, but after about 15 minutes into the install, it says that it could not install Encore 2 Client. or failed or something like that.

I've tried removing all instances of sql AGAIN, and then did the advanced install option. I selected ONLY the SQL database portions and those all install just fine. Then if I run the advanced install again and select ONLY the Encore Pro 2 option, it asks me which SQL data base I want to use... I select the new one that was just installed, it accepts it, then seems to be installing just fine, but after several minutes, it fails with that same fail message.

Has anyone else figured this out already? or is there anyone that can offer some suggestions? The other thing I thought was weird is that the default folder its trying to install the program into is the (x86) folder even though this is the 64 bit version of the program.. I've tried this process in both the regular program files folder and the x86 one and it results in the same problem.

Anyway, any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Thanks Slinky.

I think this might have something to do with SQL... I feel like i cant really get it fully scrubbed from my system. Thats just a hunch though. Its very frustrating thats for sure.

Any ideas from anyone?

Try turning off virus scanner or firewall during install? Anything in the installer log? or the SQL log?

Get Windows 7?

Good thoughts echo. I appreciate all suggestions. I'll give that a go on my next try and report back here. In the mean time, anyone else have further suggestions?

Have you looked in Services to see if the SQL Server processes are started?

You are talking about the task manager? Like... ctrl+alt+delete, selecting "Task Manager" and looking at the list of all the running programs?

I have not done that.

Would you be suggesting that I use that to make sure I got rid of it all before trying a clean install? or are you suggesting something like looking at it during install to see what its doing or something? Or am I way off?

I'm not sure about Vista 64 bit, but in Windows XP, you run msconfig (with the start -> run... ) command, to get to the running services tab.

With Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 you can right click on My Computer or Computer in Win7, and left click on MANAGE then SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS then SERVICES.
For EncorePro version 1.8.49, the service is SQL Server (ENCOREPROEX). It should be started and set to Automatic. I don't know if its the same for version 2.3 or not.

There could be more than one service. Look for anything with "SQL" in the name that is not started.

If a service is not started, double-click on it. Then you can click on start to start it. You also should set the Startup Type (drop down box) to Automatic, so it starts every time the system is booted.

Okay, and do you feel like some of these non started services could be the cause of the install failure?

If the database services are not running, Encore Pro cannot access the database.

I looked at msconfig and all the services are either running or stopped but they are all checked and none of them are disabled.

I couldn't figure out any way to manually force a service that is "stopped" to start running, but none of them are disabled, so they should run if they were needed right?

I'm feeling hopeless here. The SQL database portion installs fine, but the actual program just wont install for some reason. I've never had this much trouble getting a program to just install.

Someone asked me via PM if I'm getting any error messages when attempting the install, I'm posting my response here just in case it helps anyone else figure this out.

Not really a error message. (at least not your typical error message with helpful clues about what went wrong)

If you watch the progress of the install, it will indicate that its installing the SQL stuff, that goes through fine, then it says that its installing the encore pro 2 client, and different progress bars fill and stuff and after several minutes, a box pops up and it just says "installation of Encore Pro 2 failed" and the only option is to click a button that dismisses the entire install.

Once that has happened, the SQL database is present but the actual program is not.

If I attempt to install again without uninstalling the new SQL stuff, it will allow me to select the new SQL database as the one it should use and it will go directly into the EP2 client install, but it fails out at the same point every time.

I noticed too that msconfig doesn't let you start and stop services, but in the method that ClayL suggested, through the MANAGE, there are ways to start and stop the services. What service names are there? At least the SQL ones.... What state are they?
