1. Are there any lights that stay on all night that would potentially need to be covered by those who are light sensitive?
No
2. Does the machine, like the PR One, send out puffs of air to test for central apneas?
I have not noticed any yet
3. Can you drain the humidifier in one night on the highest setting? (I like a lot of moisture!)
I've only tried as high as 4.5 and it used a little over half the tank, on auto mode it uses about half a tank
4. How quiet is it?
Its umbeleivably quiet
5. Is it really rainout proof?
After 5 days I've had none, even with humidity ranging from 20% to 50 % in my bedroom over the past few days
6. Is the heated hose really that much smaller and more flexible?
smaller, a little bit. flexible, nope i think its less flexible due to the heated coils
7. How easy is it to refill the humidifier?
Its a bit fiddly really, there is a tiny slide latch (i find my self bent over using two hands to open it) and then you remove the tank. actually filling is a bit easier as the fill hole is recessed into the tank so you got some room for spillage if you miss the hole when pouring
8. Do the buttons work smoothly and is the plastic of high quality?
buttons are not as smooth as the S8, you kind of have to slide your finger while pressing. I woke my wife up pushing the dial button down during the night
9. Does it report and/or treat RERAs?
PASS
10. Does the LCD report flow limitations or do you need the software to see this?[/quote]
No, you need the newer ResScan 3.10 software

Since this is the thread for S9 Reviews, I'll give some of my impressions now that I've used it a few days:

- You can barely tell that it is running--extremely quiet operation.

- Settings are easier to understand and make more sense. Instead of the endless list of ResMed masks for choosing "mask type", it instead gives you the choice between "Pillows", "Nasal", "Nasal Ultra", and "Full Face". I guess they kept the ultra setting separate due to its different exhaust rate than other nasal masks.

- I haven't seen this one mentioned yet: in APAP mode, you can set the starting ramp pressure to less than your minimum pressure. On the S8 AutoSet II, this was not an option--you could simply set it to "Settling" which would just keep you at the lowest pressure for the ramp time. Now, this works more like CPAP mode, where it will slowly ramp you up to the minimum pressure setting during the ramp phase.

- Climate control is awesome! If you leave it on auto, there is one simple setting of the air temperature you want (I have mine set to 76 after starting at their default of 80 and finding it too warm). Rainout was never a huge problem for me, though would happen occasionally on my S8, so time will tell with this, but I will say that I don't get any condensation in my mask thus far.

- The machine is solid-feeling and appears high quality. The humidifier and main unit hook together easily. On early threads about this, there seemed to be some confusion about needing two cords--not true. I think this comes from the literature that mentions a 90W and 30W power supply--if you buy the humidifier with it, you get the 90W and I assume you get the 30W otherwise (or can buy later to use on planes, etc without the humidifier). I have no problem with a power brick as it sits behind my nightstand out of sight, but I guess that really bugs some people.

- The humidifier chamber seems to have more capacity than the H4i, and is slightly easier to fill and empty--there is a lip for overspill while filling and a hole to empty it out. I wish they would have not bothered with the sealed chamber and just came with the dishwasher-safe chamber--still waiting for those to come in stock at cpap.com so I can order one.

- One downside seems to be the noise of the buttons--the wheel button in particular clicks loudly, which apparently wakes up Uncle_Bob's wife. It also can squeek a little when turning the dial, but that seems to be going away after some use.

- The ClimateLine hose is really easy to attach--just put in place and turn until it locks in place. The end for the mask is also easier to put on and remove the mask. The hose itself is thinner and pretty light.

- The data you can get from this is much more detailed than the S8. There has been a lot of discussion on this already, so no need to elaborate here.

- I really like that they use a standard SD card, so there is no need to buy a special card reader--a huge plus! I just plug it into the side of my iMac running ResScan in my Parallel's virtual machine and it works just like the card reader from the S8 but with no need for special drivers.

- The new autoset algorithm does what they say... I can see in my data that obstructive apneas where the pressure is over 10, it increases the pressure after them. In this sense, I believe it is giving better therapy for me. My AHI has been lower, but I don't have an oximeter to correlate it with. I do think they have changed the way they score events, particularly hypopneas. I think some of what were counted as hypopneas on the S8 are counted as central apneas now.

Overall, I really like the S9 AutoSet and think it was a good decision to purchase it. I was planning to get a back-up machine in any case and had started to look at auctions, but when this came out I figured I'd get this to use as my primary machine and use my S8 AutoSet II as my back-up and travel machine.

All other variables left the same , the amount of water you use is highly dependent on your pressure.
More pressure, more water needed to supply the same amount of humidity.

+1 Great review. I definitely have no problem running RS 3.10 in Parallels, but sadly need to go buy a SDHC reader for my MacBook Pro. It won't go to waste though as my new camera could use it too instead of direct connection.

One of these days I am going to ResScan set up under CrossOver so I can use something with a little less footprint.

We went to the DME today (newly diagnosed), they didn't want to give us an S9 Autoset as the tech said they had been having complaints about the humidifier/software. Has anyone heard of these problems...or any we just being pushed into a different machine because of the cost? Thanks for your help.

Do some reading here on the S9. No machine is perfect so you can find some negatives for the S9. But It seems to be very well received on this forum and represents state of the art in auto-cpap. The ResScan software (3.10 or 3.11) required for the S9 is not available for sale from a DME--so I suppose that could result in complaints of sorts. But if you get an S9 and then come here, I'm sure you will find what you need in terms of software. I am not one of the forum experts but as far as I am concerned it is great software for a great machine. Then look at some of the many threads on the poor service through many DMEs and the "tricks" they resort to for the sake of their own profit. If you do some reading I think you'll realize that you had the answer within your question (hint, hint I added the "bold" in quoting your question.

PS. Welcome to the forum. There are many great folks here who are very happy to help.

My s9 is very quiet. I've used it almost 3 months now. My climate line heated tubing failed a couple of nights ago. I woke up with a rapid pulse and respirations and found that the unit had shut itself off with an error message. The humidifier was almost full, so I don't know why. Tried to contact Resmed with no response. Will see my sleep Dr. Next week.
Also, I have a question. A couple of times, I'd pulled off my nose pillows while sleeping and when I woke up, the machine was running full blast. So I tried an experiment, just let the machine run with the nose pillows while I got up. 45 minutes later the machine was running full blast. So I asked my Sleep Dr's technician about this, and he said that's the way all Resmed s9s are, because I have the small nasal pillows. He said the small pillows restrict the flow of air enough so that the CPAP machine doesn't realize that I've removed the pillows. Does this make any sense? Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, while I'm at it, the technician told me that I would be getting up fewer times at night to go the bathroom because my body would not be producing urine while I'm in a deeper rem sleep. Does this make any sense? I'm getting up just the same as before.

New with all this and I can't seem to find the clinican menu. How do I get there? I want to view the sleep report like jemem posted. I can see sleep quaility and I can print out my reports from the RESMED programs.
Thanks for you help.

Well, this is post from almost a year ago, you really shouldn't have resurrected it. However, now that you're here, you don't need to be in clinician mode to view the detailed report. Simply hold the two vertical silver buttons (Info/Setup) down while on the home screen (approx 5 secs).
