How many have Diabetes
How many have Diabetes
I was reading in the Diabetes Forcast Magazine that a lot of people who have Diabetes Type I and Type II also seem to have OSA.
Okay I will admit that I have Type II Diabetes. I can control it by use of oral meds.

I have type II diabetes, but not at a level for medication.
Re: How many have Diabetes
how about an option for not having it - so far I have managed to escape it even when I weighed a lot more than I do now

Re: How many have Diabetes
Yes an option for the sword that hangs over the head.
My mother, her brother and her mother had it.
I had gestational diabetes with my last kid. I feel like I have a big bulls eye painted on my chest! My test before OSA diagnosis was iffy.
Tomorrow I find out what my last test said.

One of my colleagues is a cardiologist here at Mayo. Over 90% of the folks he sees with type II diabetes can stop taking all medication and essentially cure their diabetes with diet ALONE. For further reading, look at the literature The China Study, Diet for a New America, and the work of Dr. Caldwell Essylston of the Cleveland Clinic. Do not become a victim of diabetes, eat a plant based diet!
Re: How many have Diabetes
Sorry to say, your colleague is full of crap. People my be able to "control" it by various means, but once you cross a line, it's not "curable".drmkII wrote:One of my colleagues is a cardiologist here at Mayo. There are people with diabetes who are vegetarians......so, that part is BS, too. Various "plants" also produce carbohydrates (sugar) in varying amounts, so that theory is full of holes.

One more item needed, unlike XPAP where I am treated at 100%, with Insulin and med's I still can't keep in range well enough. Unable to exercise to burn enough fuel. Jim

Re: How many have Diabetes
You are correct, I'll go a little farther, practically everything you eat that can be processed in your body adds to your Blood sugar load. Most people think it from too much sugar intake, it's much worse than that. Processed foods are loaded down with sugar and salt, but all foods convert to blood sugar levels.Wulfman wrote:Sorry to say, your colleague is full of crap. Re: How many have Diabetes
In most cases of diabetes, I agree with you Den. But, a large percentage of older women put on thiazide diuretics who have impaired glucose control are pushed into overt diabetes which goes away when they are switched to a non-thiazide diuretic (SHEP Study results if I'm not mistaken). Apnea makes a mess of blood chemistry and that can include high blood sugar readings that abate when the apneas and hypopneas are markedly reduced and the body begins to recover. I grant you this might be rare but these cases do exist. Oh, and read this http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/searc ... fat%20diet and this http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/ -- sorta puts a different spin on diabetes, at least Type 2.Wulfman wrote:...People may be able to "control" it by various means, but once you cross a line, it's not "curable".

Thanks for those links, Muse. I generally agree with what was said there. Another thing is that everybody's different. It's been reported that the "Mediterranean Diet" works very well for many people.
Regarding "cures", another thing I've heard is that those who have had gastric bypass surgery typically become non-diabetic again. For how long......I don't know......whether it's permanent or not.

Re: How many have Diabetes
Ex-boss's hubby had it and diabetes never went away but his blood glucose is lower. Only cure I've read of is a pancreas transplant and that was simultaneous with a kidney transplant in a Type 1. Promising work being done in Japan converting liver cells into insulin-secreting beta cells, can't remember the details , but I do remember it's supposed to go into human trials this coming year. And, the work I think in England on stem cell creation of new insulin-secreting beta cells. These latter 2 if they work would be in the 'cure' category.Wulfman wrote:...Regarding "cures", another thing I've heard is that those who have had gastric bypass surgery typically become non-diabetic again. Re: How many have Diabetes
type II; A1C= 6.5 (was 6.1 -- I've been bad!!!!); Fasting is about 120 (with meds); Was 103 (with meds).....
Anything you eat is going to cause a raise in blood glucose. What really needs to be avoided is spikes. Any compound carbo is going to do that and my weakness is macaroni!! I love my pasta salad!!!
I kept it in check for a couple years by doing portion control, lost 30+ pounds, got on xPAP and my numbers stablized nicely.
Then I fell off the portion control wagon.....I don't need 2 burritos, I want 2 burritos; I don't need 2 sandwiches, I want 2 sandwiches.....you get the drift....Oh yeah....and I gained most of the weight back!!!
There really is no such thing as a diabetic diet. A diabetic can eat anything they want. It's a matter of choices and balancing the calories and carbs to ensure blood glucose raises and falls "normally". I can have a snickers bar for lunch or I can have a salad. Basically, both have the same calories and carbs (depending on dressing - oil and vinegar is the best at least for me), but I don't know about you, but a snickers bar won't fill me up at lunch time so I'll take the salad every time!!!! I'll have half the snickers bar as a snack later..... (the other half tomorrow, so now I've gotten 2 yummies for the price of one!!!)
I'm slowly climbing back on the wagon. I have to, as my numbers are slowly climbing. It's a degeneterive condition so it's not going to get better, it'll only get worse -- my mission is slow the pace of degeneration.....it's really as simple as that!!! The problem really is, "It's easy to say....." I also need to re-lose the pounds!!!
So far mine is controlled by diet and oral meds.....
There is a point where it can be totally controlled by diet, however, if it's a true diabetes condition, over time, it will degenerate beyond the ability to control with diet......
cheers

I use Byetta. Though it is injected it functions more like the oral meds rather than insulin.
